Off The Slant

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Off The Slant

Postby AJM » September 15th, 2010, 9:33 am

At the risk of stepping on The Rock's toes - which I may well be doing as I don't appear to have received an issue of Genii for several months - may I direct Forum members to an excellent book entitled 'What The Dog Saw' by New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell.

The book contains a collection of his previously published essays which cover a wide range of diverse topics - a couple of which may be of particular interest to our little community:

'The Pitchman'
Ron Popeil and the Conquest of the American Kitchen.
How the art of 'the pitch' moved from the sidewalk to national television.

'Something Borrowed'
Should a Charge of Plagiarism Ruin Your Life?
Some interesting views on matters relating to plagiarism and copyright.

'Dangerous Minds'
Criminal Profiling Made Easy.
In an essay which questions the reliability of criminal profiling, Mr Gladwell references Ian Rowland's book on Cold Reading.

I would highly recommend this book.

Offward...
