I was enthusiatically reading Mr. Giobbi's article-which I love to do- and noticed something interesting. I've never run across info on preparing a new deck of cards and then resealing them.

I've heard of it, but have never got the actual details on the matter. I have a decent magic library and I've never read about this. Maybe I have in past years and just skipped over it, but I dont remember seeing it anywhere.

I find this little bit of info very interesting at this time.
So per the request of Mr. Giobbi, if I may, or should I say, if someone would be so kind...could you share the details of this bit of info?

The deck resealed is an idea from gamblers.

Here is (in old french) an excerpt from Le Mpris & contentement de tous les jeux de hasard by Olivier Gouyn de Poitiers, published in 1550.

"Dautre part, quand tu iras jouer avec lui & quil sera question davoir des cartes il feindra den envoyer acheter un jeu tout neuf & toutefois il en aura un duquel toutes les cartes auront pass par ses mains, combien quil semblera tre tout neuf car ils tudient si bien cela quils savent aussi bien les lier et les empaqueter que ceux-l mme qui les lient & les font pour les vendre."

Darwin Ortiz describes a method to do this in "CardShark" in a "back in time" type routine where the card case reseals itself as climax.

The Ortiz routine referenced above is "Time and Again", Cardshark, pg 85.

Ortiz does state that resealing methods have been "extensively researched by chart cheats" since it is "standard priactice to reseal the deck to make it look brand-new" after marking the deck. Steve Forte confirms this in his remarkable Casino Game Protection. He writes: "It's well known that getting to a sealed deck is quite easy, despite the many tamper proof seals and wrappers promoted by the manufacturers." (pg 464) While he doesn't go into detail on exactly how to reseal the deck, he does describe several tells on page 498.

This company: http://www.showplacemagic.com/ used to offer a deck resealing kit, complete with shrink wrap cellophane and realistic looking deck seals back in the early 90's (also sold through "he who must not be named's" company).

I used to just take a pen knife, pry open the cellophane on the bottom of the short side, slide the box partially out, pry open the bottom of the box, replace/stack the deck, seal the box with white glue, refold the plastic and gently heat with an iron. Worked like a charm (as long as I didn't overheat the plastic) since it wasn't coming under really close scrutiny. If you can't get the heat just right, Ortiz' method of sealing the plastic would seem to be the way to go.

For a while USPCC construction was so shoddy, I had a couple of the deck box bottoms already practically falling apart, which made things quite easy.

It was called Sealed Deck. You get 24 sheets, stickers (labelled A US playing card company!) and - nice touch - the little plastic hanging tags.

Now I've dug it out, I may have to give it a go...
