Walkaround Design Duplication

Postby Andrew » July 31st, 2008, 5:52 pm

I carry around laminated cards. Each has a different drawing: a baby, birds, tea, etc. I actually took the cards I bought once for "The Empress" effect, laminated them and now use them this way.
Everything is in the hands, showing the spectator each drawing.
Square up the 30 or so cards.
Take a small post-it, put it on the back card, and draw the one drawing you think the spectator just thought of.
Go through the cards again. Spec points out her thought-of drawing.
Turn the whole pack of cards around. On the back is your post-it-- the drawing on it is the same one she thought of.

Explanation: first saw the method on a DVD by British corporate magician whose name escapes me: a card prediction trick called "Storm Force" something. I just used post-it notes and bigger, laminated drawings.

ODDS actually works very well (in fact much better) in a walk-around/close-up situation. I am planning on using it for a charity walk-around that I'll be performing in and has tried it out on a few friends and got very good reactions.

Best part is that it's angle-safe.

Any other impromptu duplication that uses audience suggestions to come up with the pictures and then the L*** System is just as good. Only thing to convince the audience is that the cards are thoroughly mixed, so perhaps that's the only disadvantage.

With Steve Shaw's Director's Cut (Alakazam Magic) you can do a design dupe of almost thirty movie posters. There are also a host of other effects that you can do, as well, and he has a horror edition, too.

I believe this is credited to Simon Shaw. Steve is some other mental dude.

John Riggs makes a variety of great impression devices (clipboards, memo pads in various sizes, "executive folios," etc.) several of which (especially the memo pads and folios) can be used very effectively to give the performer the necessary information "on the fly" in "walk-around" situations. Their advantage over any system that uses cards with forced or suggested images is that the participating spectator has a TOTALLY free choice of any shape, design or image instead of being limited to one either forced, suggested or selected from a list.

The other rather obvious solution is to use a glim or shiner. While this may present some angle problems, they can be largely overcome with skill, experience and the proper shiner.

I've never been a fan of Drawing Duplications where you had them write on a business card, and then kept that card in the pack as you write yours.

Because Spectators are not stupid, and it's easy to back track and say he must have looked at it, some how he had to of. maybe they don't know when or how but still the conclusion they come up with.

I guess really thinking about it, you could say the same for any drawing duplication

You could say the same for pretty much any magic trick.

Place it into a peek wallet, or a 'sight unseen' type wallet. You can even place it in the wallet and steal straight back out onto the card pile.... many options where you don't need to appear to be still hanging onto it. Quite a few options for obtaining an impression from the card too?

+1 on the Kuffs effect. I've been using it for a while now, on regular playing cards, and it works well.
