37500th messages added to the MAGIC! Archive

Postby Tabman » January 4th, 2010, 11:46 am

500 new (old) messages from Kevin Curtin, Max Maven, Pete Biro, Geno Munari, Frank Zak, Steve Bryant, Evan Katz, Scott Alcalay, Bill Wells, Cy Keller, T A Waters, Burton the Bizarre, Charlie Randall, Michael Ammar, David Lichtman and Tabby Crabb; just some of the magic names in this latest upload bringing the total of messages in the historic pre-internet MAGIC! archive to 37,500 messages with many more to go.

Experience history as it was written at http://mfbtw.com

It's freezing in the deep south today and probably all week and it's just too cold to work in the shop today so I'm updating the archives.

Hey Tabby,

I really enjoy the work you have done with the Sefalaljia set... I just thought you might want to check out the second Sefalaljia routine which Stewart James put out. It is a whole other routine using simialr props. It was marketed by Jeff Busby and then later re-printed in THE JAMES FILE. It is a great addition to the original routine (from THE JINX magazine)...

Keep up the great work!

Joe

Joe, thank you for the kind words.

Theres good news surrounding the 1939 version I am making. David Ben is going to add the El Tab prototype kit to the Stewart James holdings as soon as I am done using it. I think the weather is going to start warming back up in the south and I can get back to work on it.

My relationship with JB began right on MAGIC! in the 1980s, in fact with many in magic. For the archives please visit http://mfbtw.com

Just uploaded 1000 more messages while Im waiting for the shop to warm up. I eyeballed the messages while I was formatting them and was happy to see some really interesting conversations with T A WATERS. I always loved TA and was happy that he participated with us on MAGIC! along with Max, Pete, and all the others.

Magic!-85 just uploaded to the MAGIC! Archives. This makes I think 42,500 messages now online. The conversations are starting to get interesting as we approach the final year of operation of MAGIC! with hackers and a sabateur plus Lynn Healy checking in from the Netherlands. Healy of course is Jeff Busby's former wife. There was a feud between Busby and TA Waters who Lynn got to serve Jeff with divorce papers. What a tangled web

500 messages added to the archives this morning.

The late T A Waters was especially chatty in this group of messages. It seems there was a controversy involving the wording in an ad for the Desert Magic Seminar. Also Kevin Curtin, Max Maven, Pete Biro, Bill Wells, Michael Ammar, Geno Munari, Steve Bryant and others.

44,500 now in the archive.

"Also Kevin Curtin, Max Maven, Pete Biro, Bill Wells, Michael Ammar, Geno Munari, Steve Bryant and others."

Seven guys (and others) who needed a life! It was fun though, and seemed friendlier back then.

It was life as well as a great time, I agree; friendlier and many of us developed real friendships that exist even today. Many of the friends I cherish in magic, like you, I developed because of MAGIC! I feel a real loyalty to David Lichtman and his dream of a magicians only bbs. He was really forward thinking and made it possible for most of us to communicate on a daily basis making magic bigger.

MAGIC! was a magicians only forum much like Genii and the Magic Cafe became. They are in numeric order but can be sorted into thread order too. Somebody showed me how to do it earlier. I'll have to look back and see if I can find it.

There was no internet available and we all called into the BBS (bulletin board system) via telephone and phone modem - very slow primative modems too. It was a first for magicians. You can see all the "names" associated and excited to be talking to each other.

There were also nodes in the Netherlands and New Zealand.

I spent the entire evening reading one the archive page. Pretty neat. I got to read some discusions bout the Elmsley Count, impresions of a young Cyril at Day of Magic at UCLA, many tips on handling of effects and also Max Maven claiming that Magicians are easier to fool than Laymen. After thinkin bout it some, I think he's right in it that we get lead down "the garden path" easily.

Inspired by yalls comments I just formatted and uploaded Issue #94 to the archives.

Also, and yall all are probably way ahead of me but if you're a Windows Explorer user, in your browser controls you can go to File "Edit" then "Find on this Page" and search by name, subject, thread or whatever you want. I cant believe it took me this long to start doing that. Live and learn, I guess.

Back then, Jerry Burton the Bizarre developed a "MAGIC! Reader", I dont remember what he called it. He later became a major robotics guru and built a huge domed complex on Colorado's high plains but Ive lost touch. Many of us love Burton dearly but I'm afraid he has passed on.

47,000 historic messages online now.

The big discussion on Himber Rings continues. Just trying to keep the torch lit...

Don't forget, I also set you up a custom Google search for searching your archives: http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=00127 ... ffj8_bcllk

For example, you can quickly find that cyril was mentioned in #24, #25 and some others:

Share your knowledge on the MagicPedia wiki.
