March Issue of Genii Magazine

Postby Roberto » February 13th, 2010, 5:37 pm

Hello all,
I just received my copy of the March issue (Volume 73, No. 3) of Genii. It was great to see Tony Giorgio back with his, "The Giorgio Letters" column. I used to always enjoy reading this column back in the 90's when I first got started in magic. Keep him coming Richard, thanks!

I really enjoyed the article on Angelo Carbone. Always like David Regal's interviews.

One thought: Maybe since they are not so easily found, we could have a small listing in this thread on where to purchase Angelo's official marketed items?

I found an offical OUT OF ORDER at practical magic in the UK if anyone is interested.

Yes, it's true! The March issue of Genii is now on its way to all subscribers.

This month's extravaganza begins with my own "Genii Speaks," in which I talk about the new line of Tenyo for 2010.

You get Jon Racherbaumer's "On the Slant," certainly the most unusual column in any conjuring magazine.

We feature "Now Performing," which gives you the low-down on who's performing where at The Magic Castle, and in New York, Chicago, and Boston.

Roberto Giobbi's "Genii Session" is next with a new handling of "The Einstein Card Trick"--self working and smart, too.

Tony Giorgio returns after a long hiatus with a new installment of "The Giorgio Letters" in which he talks about the colorful slang of the hustler.

The second installment of Max Maven's new column "Lost Horizons" describes a self-working mystery of mentalism called "Diskette."

"Radnevsky's Real Magic" is Prakash Puru's explortation of an innovative off-Broadway show starring Peter Samelson, Dennis Kyriakos, and Luke Gopnik, with an additional piece by Luke's proud dad, New Yorker magazine writer Adam Gopnik.

And we haven't even hit the big feature yet! Next David Regal interviews creative wizard Angelo Carbone, whose many inventions and marketed items mark a high point in magical creativity. Then we are treated to seven tricks from Angelo.

The issue wraps up with "Light from the Lamp" in which Jamy Swiss, Dustin Stinett, and David Oliver review books, videos, and tricks.

Another great issue for only $4.50 (the price when you subscribe for one year and get a free copy of the Harry Anderson/Jon Racherbaumer 32-page Jinx).

The latest issue sounds great! One of my big wishes was to see a feature on Angelo Carbone. The guy is a genius! I think he is the Lubor Fiedler of my generation...

Got mine a few days ago.
Was interested in the cootie catcher routine -- reminded me of something I read about 13 years ago in book about monkeys.

Best,

What did everyone think of Angelo's tricks? Extremely clever--particularly the torn and restored paper with the tag.

Clever to say the least. The first one I was drawn to was the 'Sawing' -- a great effect with brilliant thinking.

I've also previously spent time with his impromptu card rise - very fine.

The last item ('Twister') seems unclear to me. Is it a partial description of a trick Tenyo rejected, or are the pics telling the story? Was something omitted?

There's no explanation of Twister: I thought it was an interesting effect and wanted to show photos of the prototype. I wish Tenyo had put it out! It's EXACTLY the type of thing they need to start putting on the market again.

The floating quarter is brilliant. I'm going to make one up with a drywall nail, which has a flat head and will, I hope, attach more securely and easily to the dime. I just love the idea of the dime being the gaff used to float the quarter.

I think TENYO have taken it a 'bit easy' over the past few years. Indeed I seem to remember a couple of years where none of the effects were of interest. They don't seem to take the same risks as much. A real shame. Things are looking up with the release this year of Angelo Carbone's brilliant floating card effect though. But - I do wish they would 'push the envelope' more like they used to. Some more Lubor Fiedler would be a great start! Classic Tenyo effects are not only novel in method but also in effect as well. Some years every effect seemed like a winner. I also think it would be great if Tenyo could archive or publish the protypes that didn't make it. I bet they have a bunch of brilliant concepts which may never reach the marketplace. That would make a fascinating chapter for the book on Tenyo which I think needs to be written one day!

Joe

PS I am picking up my copy of GENII next week. Can't wait to check out Angelo's stuff. The guy is INCREDIBLE!!!

Ive recently received a (now discontinued) Angelo creation, Mini-morphosis. ( Tenyo) Clever thinking by Angelo, pity about the CLANK when doing the business. I would like to see Tenyo Elite make a higher quality version.

I just finished reading the MARCH issue. Great job, Richard!

I really like the floating coin idea from Angelo Carbone - almost feels like a brand new approach to that effect. But - what has really being hurting my brain is thinking about the TWISTER prototype that Angelo produced for TENYO. It sounds like it could have being incredible. Hopefully it will see that light of day in some other way - maybe as a chapter in one of Angelo's upcoming books? Speaking of which - I can't wait to see them see the light of day as well...

Thanks to Angelo and Richard for another great issue!

The March issue of Genii just arrived yesterday here in Sydney, Australia and it is superb. I'm enjoying the article on Angelo, and it's packed full of great stuff. Maven's Lost Horizons articles are a great new addition.

Best Christmas gift, especially from a mother in law!

Angelo,

I just received "Out of Order" and want to tell you that I think it is absolutely brilliant. Somehow this slipped past me (when you first released it) but after reading the aritcle in Genii I knew that it would be great.

Thanks for the great service and amazing trick!

And for everyone else - purchase Out of Order directly from Angelo. You will not be disappointed!
