I'm very sad to report that I've just learned of the passing of Patrick Page. Further details as they become available.

As many of you likely have heard since I posted this, I've just received an email from Alan Watson confirming this sad news.

Here's an interview with Patrick from last year's FFF:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Pat Page is one of those guys about whom one might be tempted to say that he forgot more magic than most magicians ever knew. The thing is; Pat never forgot any of it.

My condolences to his wife, family, and many friends.

Indeed this is verry sad news. Magicians everywhere have lost one of their friends.
As mentioned Pat's wife passed away a few years ago. And now, they are together once again.

rest in peace Pat.. A magical, gentle man, in every sense.

Only last night, I was talking to a friend about trying to see Pat next week.

We've lost a great magician, a wonderful man and a kind and loyal friend.

For my money, Pat Page was the greatest all-round magician of recent times. His influence will be felt for generations to come.

Pat Page was a dear friend and, as some of you know, for the past two years I was working with him on a big book of his magic. Some of my fondest memories will be of the time I spent with Pat in his London flat, which was filled to the brim with magic detritus (and treasures) of every description.

Pat knew magic history, close-up, stage magic, he was a dealer, a demonstrator, an author -- I could go on and on. The only person I know who comes close to his breadth of magic knowledge is John Thomnpson.

I have given his family my pledge to finish his book.

I will miss him more than I can express.

Pat's passing is very sad, even if not unexpected. He will be sincerely missed by those of us who knew him and those who did not because they knew of him or have had the benefit of his wisdom. He will be remembered gratefully not just for the extensive knowledge referred to in posts above but for his constant willingness to impart it.

Much sympathy to his family.

Patrick Page gave a wonderful lecture in New Jersey years back and he was a joy. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge. If you never saw him or are unaware of his charm, please purchase one of his dvds or written work and experience his magic.
My condolences to his family and friends.

A while ago I got off the phone to Jean Walton (Roy's wife, for those that don't know). Being a nurse, she said that she had a different outlook; he had a good inning and kept working up to the end. His inspriation will last forever, memories will come flooding back and I imagine next weekend will be full of stories.

I'll never forget seeing Pat and Gordon Bruce sitting at the back of opening night of one of my shows. No pressure there, then.

Take care, Ian

Very sad to hear this news.

Derren Brown posted his thoughts about Pat over on his blog. I only met Pat once, briefly, but I think this sums him up quite well:

[H]e was a brilliantly rude, sharp-witted, sensationally likeable Scot, better at magic and more knowledgeable than any of us.

This is very sad news. I met Pat a few times and he was always very, very generous with his time. To lose Pat Page and Ali Bongo in the same year is too much.....

Very sad news indeed.

"Le grand livre de l'illusionnisme et des tours de prestidigitation" has had a profound effect on me. This was my first book of magic. I remember going to the bookstore every Saturday for months, dreaming of what I would find in the book (it was sealed), remembering every details of the jacket and knowing the text on the back of the book by heart.

I finally got my parents to buy it for me for Christmas. It is probably one of my greatest gift I ever received.

I'll be the first in line to buy it.

I did not hear that. She was with him the last time I saw him (when he escorted me to my room when someone who worked at the hotel we were staying at couldn't explain to me which way to go). It doesn't seem like it was all that long ago.

Nothing seems like it was all that long ago [sigh]. :(

Pat was a great guy who did not let his illness--multiple cancers in his bones and lungs and elsewhere--get him down. He will be missed.

what a shock...in a sense.

we were looking forward in seeing him at the MCA 2008.
My mom was talking to Graham Putnam and he told her the
reason why he had to cancel. It was a bit amusing to the end,
but also a bit frightening.

i've never met pat. but my mom and dad always had good
memories of him...

and then there is the story that pete tells when he and patrick
stayed in the charlie miller suite with uncle jay's mom in shock...

good times, good stories.

I told Pat that strory after Pete posted it on the Magic Cafe. I asked him if it was true and he said, yes, sort of.

That was typical Pat.

He was a real benefit to magic. He's given us so much.
What immediately springs to mind: The Big Book of Magic (that got him kicked out of a magic society). The Vernon interviews - From the end of My Cigar, 1 and 2. The Page Boy pages in Pabular. His Trick-a-tape videos (I hope someone re-releases them). The material L&L re-released; I got out his sponge ball DVD to rewatch just two days ago.
Add to this the advice he gave so many magicians. The Wayne Dobson TV shows would have been very different without Pat's involvement.

I look forward to the book, Matt.

As I've posted on other forums, this truly marks the end of an era.

From one kilt-wearing magus to another, thank you, Pat, for all that you gave to magic. I'll be forever grateful.

In the mid 1970s when I was supposed to be studying for a masters degree at the London School of Economics, I was usually in Davenport's magic shop watching Pat work (I didn't have much money to actually buy anything). The route from my apartment over to LSE passed right by the shop and I couldn't resist. I got a whole other education.

Pat was the first person to show me the Elmsley Count and Roy Walton's "Cascade" and my magic world got much, much bigger, immediately. Pat let me dig through all kinds of old manuscripts and books and I still have all that stuff. He was a wonderful person.

I am editor of The Broken Wand in The Linking Ring, and I am looking for a newspaper obituary or any other information about Patrick Page to put in an obituary on him. Please help us to honor the fine magician. Send to me, Dennis Schick, at crylds@att.net. Thank you.

At Denny's, we were lucky to have him lecture/workshop twice in recent years (thanks to FFFF). Patrick Page was the embodiment of magic. From him, I learned the significance of two words: simplify and simplicity. He leaves a substantive legacy, to be sure.

Without a doubt one of funniest lectures I ever seen in my life. He was at a SAM convention, I think it was Boston in the late 70's. As I remember it started at midnight or later. Just the working knowledge of the topit was enough for me. Add the jokes and it was priceless.

Thanks Pat.

"The Page Boy Speaks..."

I was just reading through some of Pat's old columns from Pabular. He devoted one (March 1975) to why it is that he likes magic:

Everything I've said so far could have been said before (and probably was) but my reason for saying it again was simply to state the face that I'm glad I'm in the magic business one way or another and I'm very happy to have made your acquaintance.

You have given a very small Scottish boy the opportunity to crawl halfway round the face of this earth (I stole that phrse from Goshman) and meet people and see places that he never dreamed existed. He has opened his eyes wide in wonderment at how some people live. I like you.
