The Topsy-Turvy Cards from Royal Road
The Topsy-Turvy Cards from Royal Road
I was wondering if anybody had (or could point me in the direction of) general information about the Topsy-Turvy Cards that appear in The Royal Road to Card Magic. I noticed that it is very similar to Tenkai's Reverse Cards Mystery in Tarbell vol. 1.
Specifically I was wondering:
The name of the sleight that is used in the trick and who invented it?
Where else it has appeared in print?
Thank you very much.

It's called the Tenkai Optical Revolve (or Reverse). It was invented by Tenkai Ishida. As far as where else it has appeared in print, you can find some references over at Denis Behr's site.
Hope this helps.

Thank you! Great information. I was also wondering about the sleight that reverses the bottom card, it is described in Royal Road but not named.
Thank you again, your knowledge is really appreciated.

Well thank you for the information about the Tenkai Optical Revolve. Anybody know the name of the sleight that is used to reverse the card in Topsy-Turvy Cards or who invented it?

I don't know who invented this, but a similar Reverse is in Card College 2, page 372, "Deck Turnover Reverse". Here the deck is turned side for side instead of end for end. No credit is given there, either.

This sleight was described before by Jean Hugard in More Card Manipulations no. 3, page 14 (1940) but not attributed.

Thanks! I just read The Vor-ac(e)-ious Magician (where the sleight is described) and it contains a very nice application of the technique. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

This reverse (can't remember now if it's the sideways version or the end-for-end version) is described in The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley Vol. 2 as part of the trick "Jubilee". The references given are Hatton and Plate (Magician's Tricks and How they are Done) and Neal Elias/Bert Fenn (for the sideways version, described in At the Table Tricks). I checked there but neither Hatton & Plate (1910) nor Elias (1946) mentions any earlier source.

Thank you for looking into it and sharing your information. I will definitely look into the works you have mentioned.

Bonjour Edwin,
Je suis content de vous lire nouveau.
Thanks for the reference in Magicians' Tricks because it's not in the Potter Index.
The sleight is explained in the trick entitled The Changing Card, page 70 (Dover Publications)

Bonjour Philippe,
Avec plaisir. Maybe you could do another one of your excellent articles on www.artefake.com about the history of the Topsy Turvy Cards. And then publish the whole series as a book...

Thanks again to everybody that has supplied me with information about the Topsy-Turvy Cards. I thought it might be nice to share a recent performance of a variation of the trick.
