It's pencil reading tuition. I am not deaf, not have any deaf friends, so I am going out on a limb here. I think you need to be able to hear to do pencil reading.

What about the blind?

I saw a Belgium guy on Dutch TV- he is able to 'decipher' objects around him ( non trickery here)
He emits sounds, he then picks up the echos ( coming back to him) of the objects around him.

The interviewer had a globe on the table, the (echo man) picked up that it was indeed a ball.

Its amazing and apparently a technique all blind people can learn, according to him.

I saw the clicking blind man too on something here. Derren Brown maybe? He was AMAZING!

But to answer your question, I would have thought a blind person would find it much easier than a person with vision, as their ears will already be super-tuned.

Walking down the street-the 'clicks' echos, will for example tell him
That he's next to a car
That there is a tall building in front of him etc

No trickery as I said, and absolutely amazing.

No one said there was any trickery. I said I thought I saw him on a show and I think that show was Derren Brown's.

He has other people on the show aside from himself you know. Especially if he wanted to talk about - say - heightened senses.

If I remember correctly there was a slate sold in the 1930s that was treated so it would make more noise when someone printed something in chalk. It was to help with sound reading.

I imagine this would take a lot of practice and would rarely be completely reliable. So many other ways that are more consistent in their results like the little device Dunninger used to hide while smoking a cigarette. That would always work.
