New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
This is the new SEVENTEEN pound book on magic history from Taschen of Germany, written by Jim Steinmeyer, Mike Caveney, and with a Foreword by Ricky Jay.
Just had a note from Magic Circular editor Matt Field today that he's already received his copy in London, so the book is on its way.
Save BIG BUCKS by buying the book at $126 instead of $200 from amazon.com (and pay only $4 for shipping!):

If you sign up fir the Amazon card, they give you another $30.00 off on the book. I see there is a minimum finance charge of $1.00. I wonder if it could be more. Is that charge every month?

Re: New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
Kevin, its a Chase card.
They own a lot of cards since
taking over first USA.
The finance charge is only to
protect them incase you don't
pay the bill. You have be careful
with that because even if you pay
the bill they will charge the $1 again.
You can rant and they (will/might)
take the stupid finance charge off.
(personal experience).

Re: New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
Thanks! Do you mean that even if I pay it off right away, they bill me a $1.00 a month for as long as I keep the account?
I just tried the Amazon deal, buy 4 books, get one free, on this book. It didn't work for me. It might not apply to this book.
Thanks Again,
Kevin

The book is so large and heavy, that free Super Saver Shipping, normally available on any order over $25, doesn't apply. But I couldn't complain because the shipping is only $4, which means they are eating most of it.

My preorder from Amazon had free shipping. Maybe it is because I ordered early and they changed the rule.

I just gave it shot. I bought it for $99.99 with the CC promotion. I used the above link, so I hope Amazon remembers you. ;)

Re: New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
My problem with the circus book?
It was the way it smelled! The glue or something made me unable to buy it. I am very serious. The stink was way too much!
We sell a lot of Taschen books through my three bookstores. Smell is usually not the main consideration.
I hope the magic one doesn't present a problem. I really want this one.. If the production doesn't stink!

When I want to remove a musty smell or smoke from a book or magazine, I use used fabric softner sheets to remove the smell.

Make sure that the sheets are used sheets, because the oils in a new one will eat away the paper.

Well, that can't work: I have a closet full of those sheets downstairs in the laundry room and my bookcases are in my study. Any more separated and they'd be in different zipcodes. Yet STILL my copy of Greater Magic smells like a dirty ashtray!

Re: New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
Yes, Danny it works.
1) Take crappy Greater Magic and place in plastic bag.
2) Take the used sheets and place in smaller plastic. Leave bag open. The more, the merrier. Put this bag inside the bag with book.
3) Wait for new edition of Greater Magic to be published. ...Kidding
4) Seal the bag with the book and wait. The longer the better. You can check it in two weeks.
Send Pay Pal payment for book conservation expertise to me when invoice arrives.
Enjoy,
Kevin

Re: New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
This afternoon the postman has handed me the massive copy of Magic 1400s 1950s. Before ordering the book test your coffee-table first. According to the packing slip the book is weighing 6.77 kilos. The book is stunning! I dont know where to start. It is overwhelming! Leaf through the book already: http://www.taschen.com/lookinside/00378/index.htm
BTW The book isnt smelling!

If you click on the link Dick put up in the last post, you will find the ENTIRE book up on Taschen's website.

Well it is not the ENTIRE book but it will give a good impression. The book has 650 pages and the size is 11,4 X 17,3 inches. It is the only book in my library I cannot pick up from the table with one hand.

It smells bee-yoo-tee-ful. The text is in English, French and German. The book is so heavy that the carton in comes in has a plastic handle so it can be carried!
The illustrations are magnificent, reproduced with typical Taschen care.
Christmas is a-coming. If you've got a bookshelf that's big enough (and strong enough) to take it, this book is a magic lover's dream.

As far as I know at least the two cycles.
So if you only used it for the book and not plan to use
it for nothing else. you'll end up with a statement
with a $1.00 on it.
Chase did that with my Borders card before they parted
ways with Borders for a screw up I had at Chase.
It got corrected and I got all the fees reversed between
Chase bank and Chase CC services.
I ranted and raved on the phone with the CC and demanded
to speak to a supervisor.
It got resolved.

According to Amazon, Magic has yet to ship to their customers (or at least, to me). Did those that received it buy from Amazon or Taschen directly?

The sites of Amazon (USA & UK) are quite clear about the delivery date of the item. I have received my copy via the Taschen importer in the Netherlands.
After two days of amazement I realize I like the book so much because there are so many pictures I have never seen before anywhere.

Received the book today from Amazon UK... it's AMAZING! The quality of the pictures is unbelievable... very clear! And many of them are really unusual, never seen before.
The only drawback? I will have to buy a tea-table for the book! :D lol

Re: New Steinmeyer/Caveney History of Magic Book Almost Shipping
Ingram, the exclusive distributor of Taschen books in the USA, received the books yesterday, so the amazon email sounds about right. Mike Caveney told me yesterday that the official release of the book will be at the LA Conference on Magic History and he'll have copies on hand to be signed by the authors, including the editor, Noel Daniel. A book signing at the Magic Castle is also planned.

I didn't know UPS works on Saturday.
Thanks,

Had mine in the UK for two weeks now - well packaged and has it's own card outer carrycase - it's heavy you'll need it.

UPS only delivers on Saturday if you pay extra.
Ditto for Fedex.
I think we've only got another five years or so of Saturday USPS normal mail delivery left before they cut that out.

No, it won't :) : the book is written in three languages (English, French and German) and you could simply read the English pages
But you may still be looking at the pictures by the time you're 70... they're great! ;)
