DERREN BROWN - PREDICTING THE LOTTERY NUMBERS

Postby Joe Mckay » September 8th, 2009, 11:51 am

Exciting times in the UK at the moment. Everybody is discussing whether or not Derren Brown can really predict the winning national lottery numbers for tomorrow night's draw ($5 million jackpot). You can see some of the trailers here:

Derren Brown - Trailers

You can watch channel 4 shows online (at their website), but I am not sure if you can do this in the US. As a Brit, it is a nice feeling that the most exciting magician in the world is from this side of the big pond...

there will be a simulcast across all channel four stations - as well as live outside projections against buildings in London (Tate Modern), Manchester (Premier Lodge/back-up Deansgate Lock), Birmingham (5-ways Entertainment Complex/Bull-ring, Moor St Side as back-up) and Edinburgh (Hunter Square/back-up Museum of Scotland), as well as getting involved on the website at - http://derrenbrown.channel4.com/

bizarrely meaning that you can get involved in SIX places.. ;)

you have to hand it to Derren and his team... good luck for what could be a career changing event! :)

I predict that out of the six numbers five will be correct.

15 minutes before the first show...I have a hunch that all of these "events of misdirection" will result in a Thomas Crown Affair style kicker.

Gonna take a month or so to find out mind you.

10 minutes before Derren reveals the British Lottery Results. Am very excited. His event are creating a real buzz on our side of the pond. The events website is crashing I believe.

Split screen, wasn't it?

The real trick is how he got so VERY much media coverage afterwards, thus making sure millions tune in tonight to watch the show.

Clever chaps. Nyman and him were 'tweeting' all day on weds saying how nervous they were etc. Just genius!

Oddly enough on a board for my industry someone suggested trained ants that formed the numbers.

I liked the theory.

On UK TV tonight -- the Derren Brown one-hour "explanation" show of his lottery prediction, followed by the new David Blaine special. Both shows got highlights in the Sunday Telegraph magazine.

This is great for magic (and magicians) over here!

Hmmmm... what is the reason for Derren to expose the method? Just a ratings ploy?

Derren DID NOT expose any method... he just did a brilliant show with some believable fibbing about "a" method on how to "win the lottery".

Great show, but nothing to do with Wednesday's prediction...

He quite often gives away false explanations for his effects that lay people find both plausible and fascinating.

He finished a stage show with a false explanation of the whole evening. Was very entertaining.

The problem is, that in my view he directly ran into "Too Perfect Theorie" and that a lot of people are aware of what a split screen is. So after the first stunning moment it leaves a bad taste...

Absolutely loved the show. Was not expecting a method so was pleased when he offered the "it was just a trick" solution. Superb showman. Superb "up the garden path" theories. Would not want to know the method now. Just enjoying he ride.

Thanks Derren and Andy xx

I haven't seen the show, but did Derren purchase a ticket? If not, what was his reason for not buying one?

Just FYI, that's illegal. It shouldn't be on youtube, and it is also illegal for Mr Ellis to embed it. There have been several law suits in America where people who have hosted sites with embedded copyrighted files have been sued.

Just to let you know, not meaning to piss on anyone's chips.

I do find it very interesting how copyright and intellectual property is disregarded by some of us...

I'm happy I got to see it before it gets DMCA'ed or whatever the UK equivalent is. When I grow up I want to be just like this kid: what an enviable combination of looks, charm, cleverness, and humor.

I'm certainly no expert, but I'm willing to bet my copy of Pure Effect that neither of the two "explanations" given are how it was accomplished. Not that it matters a bit. I'd be entertained watching Brown try to sell me ShamWows or whatever.

"Poet James" in his explanation says that at the conclusion, Derren takes an "undeserved bow."

I can't agree there. I think the entire stunt was masterfully done. It captured the attention of a large part of the British population and looked great.

You mean Derren didn't actually predict the lottery? And David Copperfield wasn't really cut in half by that laser? Aw gee, Mom, say it ain't so!

Bravo to the Objective Productions team.

I couldn't agree more Mr Field.

I thought that the idea of the stunt on Weds to create the water cooler chatter to publicise the Friday new series was genius.

The best marketing of a magic show on UK telly I've ever seen. The column inches it generated was immense.

I thoroughly enjoyed the theatre and excitement of the hour show. I then watched Blaine after and it seemed so dull in comparison. One guy walking up to hillbillies and freaking them out with shop bought tricks and patter "hey, look". The other managing to capture seemingly the whole country's interest.

Once again Messrs Brown and Nyman pull off a cracker!

Derren and his company are nothing short of brilliant. Derren himself is charming and appealing and has great "wearability," to coin a word. He has not worn out his welcome with the public which is, in itself, a rare commodity. Johnny Carson was one of the few performers in this country who had that sort of performing persona.

It was interesting to see how cleverly Brown & Company involved large groups of people in an entertaining and believable manner to "explain" how he pulled off the prediction.

This is far superior to a headline prediction which, if tragedy struck on the day of the reveal could have massive repercussions on the performer. This was a brilliant way out of that potential dilemma.

I did not see the Blaine special, but whoever scheduled it to follow Derren did not do Blaine a favor as the contrast between the two does not work well for David.

I loved the Lottery Prediction.
But, if poel james is right, I do wonder about the method.
Magicians work so hard to discount camera trickery as a possible explanation of magic on TV - because if the viewer starts dismissing magic as being camera tricks, isn't that one foot in the grave for TV magic?
