Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Three copies of Smoke and Mirrors are on ebay right now, all claiming to be 1st editions. Two appear to have black cover? the other has purple. What's the story there? which came first? Or are there even more colors?
Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
I believe the purple one is the 1st edition and the black cover a reprint.
Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Terry is correct... my reprint is black.
Also I didn't spot any black on ebay claiming to be first edition.

Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
I recently sold a first edition with a black cover, but it may have been a later printing.

First edition is purple, reprints are black.

Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Any chance you'll be offering this one again Richard?
Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Reprints are widely available. I am actually selling the one I mentioned above over on the marketplace section if you are interested.
Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Hi. I am the one selling the book at the above link. I was notified by another seller about this forum discussion, and thanks to him for doing so. My copy is black, and it states clearly that it is a First Edition and a second printing. This may be an error on the printer's part, but never-the-less, it is there. I am not attempting to deceive anyone as I am not an expert on copy. I can only list what I see with my own eyes. From my understanding, a book is only deemed a Second Edition if part of the text in the book has undergone major changes (not including the cover), and this one, I believe, has not. Thanks.
Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
Maybe Richard can clarify. Was it only the 1st edition 1st printing to get the purple cover?

Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
There was never a second edition.
There have only been several printings of the first edition.
The first printing of the first edition has a purple cover.
Subsequent printings of the first edition have a black cover.

Thanks.
Is there generally a way to tell one printing of an edition from another? Aside from big differences like the cover in this case?

Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
There is what's called a "print code" on the copyright page (back of the title page). It's the odd line of numbers that don't seem to make any sense. The lowest number indicates the printing.

Thanks again Richard.
Re: Bannon "Smoke and Mirrors"
@itcomagic -- no offense or accusation intended. I was just seeking clarification as to which color of S&M was the 1st printing.
I think the definition of "first edition" varies depending on the context: subsequent printings of the 1st edition are called 1st ed. because nothing has been changed/added to the book. But collectors usually prefer (and will pay premium prices for) 1st printings of 1st editions.
