Doc Shiels "The Mummy's Hand" routine and props

Postby wkitwizard » January 30th, 2009, 9:54 am

Constructed in 1980 by wood craftsman Bob Jackson, and hand decorated and painted by me, these props bring Shiels routine to life. Based upon a seance, with a blackout, the "Mummy's Hand" vanishes from the Egyptian cabinet, and is seen to float as a "glowing hand" up and into the air, only to vanish. When the lights come back on, the cabinet reveals a missing "hand", only to be replaced with a real
foot of a falcon. The paper mache mask is part of the Egyptian magic ritual.
The detail necessary to paint these props would be impossible for me today-with my poor eyesight and unsteady hands.

Since the "Egyptian Magic" script called for numerous other effects, I crafted a great many other items to use with the routine. If interested, please let me know and I'll post the photos here for everyone to enjoy.

This effect sounds interesting--and might fit into a concept show I'm working on...is it available as a booklet, or in some other published source? Any information appreciated! Thanks. *DALE*

This trick is described in the Supreme Magic publication, Daemons, Darkings, and Doppelgangers, by Tony Shiels. It's a relatively thin, hardcover book. It might be somewhat hard to find nowadays. Originally published in 1968, later reprinted in 1981.

The Tony "Doc" Shiels effect is a short overview of a seance stunt in this book.
Given the right atmosphere and scripting, the climax could be a stunner! This is definitely one of those presentations that calls for exacting details in the props.
