I recall reading in the Collected Almanac that very few (if any) gave RK any appreciation for the extras he would sometimes throw in. I'm glad he's giving it another try and I'll say even prior to getting the bonus that I think it's just great (and a lot of fun to get that little "something extra" in the mail).

How much you wanna bet my mailman folds the DVD to get it into my mailbox, the way he does everything else (that is, when he doesn't deliver it to someone else's address!)

The December Genii has made it across the wide Potomac complete with DVD - I've only had time to scan Genii Speaks but the issue and DVD look great!

Richard - you do know what Max's major was in college don't you? (with regard to his "cold reading of Emma).

There are many fine things in the December Genii, but the real highlight is the Derek Dingle routine. Don't overlook it.

Yes!! I 've watched it two times through already. I noticed the second time I watched it, the CD went to something I did not see on the first viewing. I don't know if this is part of the code "MagicMakers" was talking about or not? By the way, that is VERY cool.

I usually devour those magazines! Sometimes you may see me ripping them from the mail persons hands, tearing the plastic, and reading until the shakes subside. Sooooooo, when I saw the CD, that sent me over the top. Thank you!

I did have a quick ambitious question. Maybe this part should go in the close-up section. I really liked the Garcia/Lorayne effect where the card is face-up in the middle and it appears on top face-up. I REALLY liked that. But after that type of color change could you then preform Braue's "pop-up move" to end the routine? Any advice on where that particular move (Garcia effect) would fit into a routine?

Thank you

The issue has yet to make its way across 50 to Annapolis -- but it is eagerly anticipated...the DVD addition is greatly appreciated...my curiousity is piqued -- what is contained on the DVD?

I received it in Baltimore. Another great issue.

I love Jon's column. You can always count on Jon to recommend interesting books and my Amazon.com wishlist thanks you.

I liked the DVD too. What a great marketing tool - an ad that will be refered back to for months as the secret codes are revealed. Very smart!

I watched the DVD last night and this morning before the A.M. commute. Simon Lovell is very entertaining (as always), and I picked up a few ideas and techniques. The DVD is a great idea! Richard, you are to be congratulated - just when I thought Genii couldn't get any better, you prove me wrong. :D

Keep up the good work!

Richard,

Is the bonus DVD included in those issues that are shipped to magic dealers around the world?

The DVD is included in EVERY issue, including those shipped to dealers. Those who buy their issue at a dealer will be surprised to find it in a polybag for the first time--that's necessary to keep the DVD from getting lost.
Many dealers have already sold out of their copies of the December issue and have reordered!

In all honesty, I was delighted and disturbed to see the DVD -- delighted to have received a thoughtful gift, an increase in value...and disturbed to see the source of that gift..

it felt like times in the past when, as a gift, I had received dubbed copies of videos or manuscripts...I appreciate the thought, and am likely to watch/read them despite the urgings of my better angels, but I also feel imposed upon because I am expected to be grateful for an immoral gift...

For a long time I was ok with the increasing volume of advertisement for producers of shameless thefts...those who were willing to rob and stiff some of our best and brightest for their own profit...but the inclusion of this DVD shows an entirely new level of collaboration and is making me strongly consider the cancellation of my subscription...

It would be an extremely difficult decision -- given the quality of the magazine in the years since Richard has taken the helm...but one that may be inescapable if I want to support magic.

best,

Nathan.

Well, I guess than answers the question I've been pondering since the notice was posted that a DVD was included.

I haven't received my December issue yet (I haven't even received my November issue yet, for that matter) so I guess one surprise is revealed.

Hi Richard,

You had a great idea including a DVD with the December issue.

I only have one gripe  and it's not directed at you but at my retailer. My retailer has charged me more than the usual cover price for the December issue. I live in Canada and instead of paying the usual $7.00 Cnd. he charged me $10.00 Cnd.

His reasoning was that a DVD was included. I told him the cover price had not changed but that did not seem to make a difference to him. Although I knew they were pulling a fast one, I still purchased the Genii issue because I was afraid it would sell out.

I know I get screwed at times by magic shops, but this is outrageous. If anyone should profit from the extra DVD it should be you. Is he allowed to do this?

I will contact the owner on Monday and tell him that I will no longer purchase Genii Magazine at his store if I do not get my money back for the overcharge.

Hi Pierre,
The dealers were not charged any more for the December issue of Genii than any other issue. All dealers get a discount of 50% (this is standard in our field) and pay $2.50 per copy. They also pay the postage, and must amortize that among the copies. (For dealers in countries outside the US, the postage can be a significant expense and they often increase the price accordingly.)
Dealers do not sell Genii to make money: they do it as a service to their customers and to bring customers into the store. They hope that once you're in the shop you'll buy something else from them.
Every dealer is free to charge whatever he or she likes for a copy of Genii, but the price of $5 US is printed right on the cover.

Received my copy today, and on page 11, was pleased to see that Diego Rivera is contributing stories of note.
Understanding is that Placidio Domingo will follow suit.

For those who don't understand Diego's post, in one of my more embarrasing moments as the editor of Genii I inadvertantly credited the Obit of Treva "Mel-Roy" Holley to Diego Rivera.
Diego Rivera, deceased since 1957, was a famous Mexican painter and husband of (among others) Frida Kahlo.
Obviously Mr. Rivera did not write the obit. Mr. Domingo did. I am very pleased to have this small piece by the famous opera star and hope to shortly publish his thoughts on what it's like to do card tricks for Luciano Pavorotti backstage between scenes.

Arghhh. Got my issue today, and though the plastic was untouched, there was no DVD inside! Probably a packing error I'm guessing. I've sent an e-mail off to the Genii folks in the hope that they can get a copy of the dvd off to me.
