David Copperfield Assistant Rushed to Hospital During Las Vegas Show

One of David Copperfield's magician's assistants was rushed to the hospital with a severe injury during the finale performance of his MGM Grand Las Vegas show Wednesday, a rep for Copperfield tells Usmagazine.com.

"During an illusion where David attempts to walk through the rotating blades of a 12-foot high industrial fan, the fan and its platform were being rotated by one of David's illusion technicians," the rep says. "Just prior to David himself walking through the fan, [the assistant] was accidentally pulled into the vortex of the moving fan blades, causing injury to his arm and face."

The Clark County Fire Department confirms that they received a call at 11:25 p.m. from the theater.

"It was reported that someones arm was stuck in a fan prop," Scott Allison, the fire department's spokesperson, tells Us. When paramedics arrived, the assistant's arm was free and had suffered severe bleeding.

Here's a video of how the routine looks when done properly!

Copperfield was there when he woke up and presented him with a children's magic set to practice on during his recovery, his rep says.

What a great guy...Before the poor assistant starts practicing with the magic set provided to him through the largess of his employer, he should contact a very good PI attorney.

I think the magic set deal is an inside joke. It could be worse though. He could be an assistant to Criss Angel.

The injured assistant should reach for the stars in a pre-litigation settlement.

With the right representation he might even be able to wring out a set of Adams Linking Rings for compensatory damages and a Gamage change bag for punitive damages from his employer.

If he was on Angel's payroll he should go for a put option on 2009 paid admissions and one of his personal body piercing rings - one of the boss's old pre-big time ones made of copper complete with green patina.

Well, at least Brandon is going to fare better than the stagehand who got paralyzed while moving a big illusion down a loading ramp in Japan.

They were moving it incorrectly, but still, it's hard to see anyone getting hurt doing their job.

People get hurt in the workplace constantly. If everyone is paying attention and doing their job properly, people get hurt less often.

Ray,

Richard is correct, people do get hurt in the workplace, especially with props of this magnitude. You can set up as many safety measures as possible, but freak occurences and mechanical failures do creep in.

Many of these props are just as dangerous as industrial factory equipment. Table of Death; Fan; Impaled and many others can be potentially dangerous. In fact, I had a motorcycle end up falling on top of and almost crushing me during an illusion about 5 years ago.

Sincerely,
David

I've never worked with the fan...Does it actually rotate rapidly enough to create a "vortex" that would suck someone in?

Could his shirt have just gotten caught in the fan or a belt driving it?

I don't believe for one second that a "vortex" created by the fan sucked him in.

I thought I heard that the fan fell on him (not sucked anything in).
