TOMMY COOPER

Postby CardioloJest » August 3rd, 2008, 5:31 pm

Can't find a referene in our search, so forgive me if this has been a topic before.

Known as the fez-wearing magician whose tricks always seemed to go wrong, this British comedian suffered a heart attack during a televised performance. Given the usual nature of his act, the audience took some time to realize that this really wasn't part of it. He died later in hospital.

He uttered 'I don't feel well' and fell back against the curtain.

Tommy shared the same birthdate as Bobby Bernard.

A last story; Paul Daniels was once in a North African country (I forget which) and was perusing a market. On one stall a man was selling fezes (fezii?), doing the arm shake and saying 'jus like that'. Paul asked him how he knew about Cooper, but the trader had no idea who he was talking about. It turned out that every Brit who came near the stall put on a fez and did a Tommy Cooper impression...

Take care, Ian

Tommy Cooper was brilliant. There are lots of DVD compilations of his work available on amazon.co.uk, as well as John Fisher's excellent biography.

I met Tommy Cooper quite a few times over the years. Boy, could he drink, and boy was he funny! He was and is a national treasure in Britain. Much loved - much missed. To watch him is to receive the best lesson you'll ever get in comic timing. He had you laughing before he said anything. A look, a glance, a Cooper cough...that was enough! Brilliant.

A friend of mine who recently moved to Houston did a few appearances with Tommy. They had an out of town engagement, so my friend told Tommy he would have the cab driver swing by on he way to the gig and pick him up.

My friend paid for the cab, and Tommy said, "I'll get the tip."

He put something into the cabdriver's shirt pocket and said, "Here, lad. Have a drink on me!" The cabdriver had recognized him and was sure he had put a 20 note into his pocket.

My friend asked him, "What did you put in his pocket?"

"A tea bag."

It might be added that Tommy Wonder's eminent role in British entertainment is also displayed by the fact that he is portrayed on an official stamp - a rare honor for comedians/magicians, as collectors know.

Oops, absolutely... Guess I was too busy editing the rest of that beautiful sentence in my non-native tongue. Sorry for the slip - and thank you for reading closely!

We did a story on Tommy back in April when the statue to him was unveiled and they mentioned a film of his life being made. Haven't heard anymore ion it yet.

Of Tommy Cooper:
"The only time he died on stage was when he died on stage..."

I wish I'd thought of that!

The man was absolutely brilliant. Here is a Tommy joke. A man is looking into the snake pit at a zoo. He keeps flicking his tongue in and out. The zoo keeper comes up and says to the man "what are you doing?" The man replies "They started it"

Another one "Doctor it hurts when I do this (raises arm) Doctor "Well don't do it then"

Wayne Dobson tells a great story when he first met Tommy at Ken Brooke's on hid Dobson Choice DVD's.

The last quote/joke of Tommy's (posted by AJM) starts with this funny line:

"I went into the attic with the Wife. Filthy, dirty...covered in cobwebs. But, she's good to the kids!"

;-) ... and that's when the fight started...

I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?"

It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said.

So I suggested, "How about the kitchen?"

And that's when the fight started....
