Do you mean sleights and effects that "have become known as"? because, apart from Flipstick; the other two moves were not given these names by their creators, nor were they published under these names.

I'm inclined to think this is a very casual list, so here are a few that "have become known as" as Peter put it:

S.W.E. Shift
Erdnase/Houdini Change
Asher Twist
McClintock Twist
HaLo Cut
Looy's Count
P.H. Vanishing Deck

Maths is a little different than physics - but Godel's Proof... many of the landmarks are pretty well named.

In physics there are Schrodinger's equation, The Lorentz transformation, Maxwell's equations, Planck's Constant... also well named landmarks.

IMHO it's likely that in our craft the inventors don't want their stuff known by all and sundry so it's someone else who does the (dis)service to the secret builder and propigates the name and the knowlege to the group and into our literature.

Dear Mr. Townsend,

Often, in your posts, you write "IMHO"

Please, could you tell me what does that mean ?

The Charlier Cut (assuming he actually invented it. Does anyone know when the sleight first appeared in print and what it was called there?)

To my knowledge, it was first described in 1877 in Sleight of Hand by Edwin T. Sachs, page 93, (1980 Dover Edition)

BUT it was described as a PASS and not attributed to Charlier.

I think the first who described it as Charlier Pass was Erdnase in The Expert at the Card Table, page 79 (Dover 1995 Edition)

And I think that Hugard was the first (1948) to call it a Charlier Cut.

Two or three years ago, there was a post on this subject and I spoke about a gambling book in french in which this sleight was described before 1877 but I don't remember which one.

It looks like it was described in Hoffmann's More Magic (1889) as the Charlier Pass, so that predates Erdnase. And apparently Hoffmann had lessons with Charlier in the 1870's. So that would give some credence to Charlier's connection with the sleight.

You are right, it's in More Magic by Hoffmann (1890) and titled Charlier Pass

The word "pinch" has a second meaning regarding 'taking'. Wondering if that was posted with an eye toward irony or maybe Tenkai's students know if the Tenkai Pennies was given into Bobo's with his permission.

In fact, it's a Marlo's sleight.

See (for instance), Paul Gertner's Steel and Silver (1994), page 68.

Richard Kaufman writes : "this is a steal of Ed Marlo's from Bull's Eye Coin Tricks (1942)* which has often been miscredited to Johnny Benzais."

* See, page 7, para. 2, of Passe Passe Coins

Thanks Philippe - was not aware of the Marlo connection. Only recently started exploring that coin technique when it occurred to show the loose coins at the fingers as an 'out and across' display then with a sweeping action inward and across, almost closing that hand, appear to drop them into the waiting other hand (yes retention pass timing) let one (or more if using a nesting set) cling. ;) << elbow extends arm/hand out to display, then arm retracts and hand curls as pretend drop happens on way back to center - continue action to side rest position >>
