Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
I have not been able to use "Out of Position Count"(a modified Elmsley count) much.

Thank you for sharing.
Was there a question in there?

Looking for some information on this count so that I could use it.
Is there a book which gives a detailed account of this count ?
It will be nice if members could post their views, thoughts, history etc. on this count.

Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
Why would you need a "book"? If the 3rd card down in a face-down 4-card packet is reversed, a "regular" EC hides it. The OPEC does the same if the 2nd card down is reversed. That's it. HL.
Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
I am looking at how to use the move in any effects. I tried some possibilities, but could not get much success. I would like to use it if there is a need... I thought a book might be a good source.

Marlo Magazine Vol. 3 (if memory serves) is the first reference along with its first application.

I've never used an OPEC count and never written up a trick requiring it. Is it widely used?

I tried to explore some useful link between normal EC and the OPEC from the perspective of movement of cards for e.g. perform EC then OPEC or first OPEC and then EC. Till now no luck.

Not sure if it is widely used...it also appears in Randy Wakeman's books.

Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
There is a cyclic movement of cards in OPEC, i.e. Each card moves from top to bottom of the packet(1,3,2,4,1,2...) and the same continues.
In normal EC the cyclic movement of cards is from second from top(2,3,4,2,3..). The top card remains on top always.
Possibly this property can be made to use.

Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
The OPEC Count was simply a way of being able to SEQUENTIALLY count a four-card packet (ala Elmsley Count) without having to shift a card prior to performing an Elmsley Count. It was not designed to be the BASIS of a trick. Many packet tricks, because of the resultant disposition of cards, require gratuitous moves--namely displacements.
There are many REMEDY COUNTS (as I call them) cataloged in COUNTHESAURUS.

Boy, you guys do get technical. Let me repeat: If the 3rd card down in a face-down 4-card packet is reversed, a "regular" EC hides it. The OPEC does the same if the 2nd card down is reversed. That's it. HL.
(So, a "regular" EC shades the 3rd card in a 4-card packet; the OPEC shades the 2nd card. Seems as if that "says" it. No?) HL

Please refer to Allan Ackerman's DVD PREQUEL/SEQUEL. There is an explanation of the OPEC COUNT found under SLEIGHTS.

One routine that it is widely used in is John Bannon's Royal Scam. I know it appears in Phil Goldstein's book Focus also.

I didn't see OPEC listed in the "index of slights" at the back of Focus. Any idea which routine?

Here's another great routine which utilizes the "OPEC" count..."Clear to the Point" found in Peter Duffie's "Effortless Card Magic" page 103.

Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
Today I saw a performace of a trick having multiple changes. Elmsley count was used may times.
In this trick two cards(top and bottom) were moved to perform an Elmsley count. By just changing the top card and performing an OPEC count the same effect was achieved.
The OPEC count was justified in this trick as it eliminated one step.
Hope more tricks will follow using OPEC count.

Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
I always found the OPEC looked a little odd, taking the first card off the bottom always left me cold.
Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
I had never heard of this until I purchased Royal Scam. I've only played with it a few times and can not get this to work. Go figure, can palm, pass, and perfect faro on command, but can't do a packet trick that uses this funky Elmsley count!
Re: Out of Position Elmsley Count(OPEC)
Individual preferences will always be there, and also uncomfortable to be performed by some. Still OPEC can be used.
