Neil Patrick Harris was excellent this morning on Ellen. Catch it if it hasn't run yet in your market.

It was really terrific! He plugged the Magic Castle, gave Ellen a 30-day membership (removing the card from a flaming wallet), and then told the studio audience they each would get a 30-day membership.

He then performed a very nice comedy guillotine illusion (assisted by Ed Alonzo and Ellen).

It was really a fantastic appearance: Great for magic and the Magic Castle.

The Ellen board is buzzing and the webmaster at the Castle site tracked the hits and they were up big time.

Well done, and thank you Neil Patrick Harris!

I liked the part where Ellen went back and talked to Neil's head in the basket.

That's the best guillotine routine I've ever seen. Got in. Got the BIG laugh. Got out.

Nice.

The guillotine routine is an old gag that still plays, particularly with Neil's body language when the blade came down!

Very funny spot.. I agree. Nicely done NPH.

Sadly tho... Some idiots viewing youtube insist on trying to expose any trick in the comments section immediately.

If you have not been watching 'How I Met Your Mother' you should be. Absolutely hysterical ensemble show.

NPH's character is basically a yuppy slut who is stuck on himself and sleeps with any willing female. It reminds you of a very young Dan Fielding.

He even slips in a little magic every now and then.

Yesterday, Ellen apologized for "scaring" kids and Mom's that prompted them to send in e-mails of concern. She then showed tapes of the commercial break with NPH climbing out of the chopper and waving to the audience. This done to assuage any further fears out there.

She prefaced her apology with a statement that she thought people understood what her show was all about -- FUN.

Just a thoughtful professional thing to do.

How pathetic that she had to do that. Is the audience comprised of idiots?

It's not necessary that her audience be comprised of idiots, just that there be some idiots in the mix. There are.

I can see some children seeing it and being upset. I know I've had discussions with youngsters about what's make-believe and what's real on television and in the movies.

I'm glad Ellen made it clear.

As for the adults who bought into it....I just think of the line from Blazing Saddles - they're the salt of the earth, the common clay of the new West... you know: morons.

I agree that it is pathetic that Ellen had to apologize to her viewer(s). ...like she'd cut-off a guy's head on national TV for real.

I'm growing real tired of this "P.C." era that we live in...

Ellen read a few letters, and it appears they were just from (or on behalf) of concerned children (e.g., a 5 year old and an 11 year old) who were watching.

She specifically apologized to parents for any kids who might have been scared. I doubt any adults were fooled by the illusion.

Well the damn adults who were with those kids should have been able to explain that it's a trick--people don't actually have their heads cut off on talk shows. Ridiculous.

A lot of people watch the show with their kids. Ellen is a family friendly show and always has the stars the kids love.
I'm actually surprised Ellen didn't think of that beforehand.

I'm sorry, but if a parent can't deal with their child seeing a fake guillotine on a talk show, then the parent needs help, not the child.

Made the mistake a few years back and took my girlfriend's 5-year old to Universal City. He was in tears and really thought the Cylons were attacking.

Parents really need to monitor the young and/or impressionable watching TV - it's a terrible babysitter.

I heard that BBC had a technical interruption while broadcasting Sorcar in the middle of the Buzz Saw (the bloody part). Billy McComb told me that the switch board at the BBC was jammed...

Must agree with Kaufman - If parents can't handle that with a simple explanation, then they must freak out with what's shown in commercials, cartoons, news, etc. on a DAILY BASIS. Ellen is not a "kiddie" show, and she sometimes has guests talking about very adult issues in addition to her lighter segments. To "dumb it down" to the lowest common denominator is ridiculous.

These same parents are in for a rude awakening when their children turn into teenagers. Would love to be a fly on the wall and watch them attempt to explain the world to them.
