I think the show is great. Our June issue will have the second part of David Regal's articles, which covers the first three shows. Our July issue will cover the balance of the shows and the winner.

I saw the complete first episode last night on VH1 and they did show who was sent home. But I will keep that to myself for now just in case no one else saw it. All I can say is that person deserved to go.

Nice to see that the performing of magic isn't depicted as just being self-working and easy to do...several of the celebs completely messed up their tricks for the public (granted, they supposedly only had 1-day of rehearsal).

This at least, reinforces that practice, skill & showmanship are requirements to be a good magician.

The problem with the old "Circus of the Stars" TV show - was the public's perception: "If Bea Arthur (insert any celeb name here) can do that...how hard can magic be?"

I think this VH-1 series will be good for magic & magicians. I look forward to seeing future episodes.

Thanks for the link. I really enjoyed the program. It's refreshing to see that they include footage of the effects failing, and of the celebrities withering. I understand the misfortune that befell C. Thomas Howell, but how, oh how did Carnie manage to blow the Card Through Window effect the first time?

Ant was born to play the role of the annoying, scheming drama queen.

My Open Prediction is that Carnie will be the first celebrity to get kicked off, and that Hal Sparks will be the winner.

I'll be glued to the tube every week.

I loved it when Rocco said, "It would be unfortunate should youse let me down, Hal. I know where your family lives." I predict Hal will be too scared to screw up.

I like Ant as a comedian on-stage, but think he's just annoying in any other situation.

Overall, I got a kick out of this one and will look forward to seeing the series.

It's ok
A day to learn a trick ??
I think the magic was very good ( Card on Bottle!!)
You know Dancing with the Stars (DWTS)has charm and they show how hard it is to learn how to dance. This doesn't.
Hal is very Funny !! I think he'll win. He looks like a magician.
The [censored] doll babe chick girl was good too.
But...It's TV They can make you look good or bad.
But great for the other magicians on the show.
I wonder what laypeople are going to say ? We'll find out in few weeks when you go out to perform.
The producers should have a profile on the stars and magicians.
I'll be surprise if it gets picked up for another season.

Episode Three.

ROCCO: "Ant is a pimp. He never could've outfought Santino. But I didn't know until this day that it was Howell all along."

HAL: "What?"

ROCCO: "So, Kimberly will move against you first. She'll set up a meeting with someone that you absolutely trust guaranteeing your safety and at that meeting you'll be assassinated. I like to drink wine more than I used to. Anyway, I'm drinking more."

HAL: "I don't...

ROCCO: "Leave the D'Light. Take the cannolis."

HAL: "Oh God! Please don't kill me..."

When you consider that most of the performers in Phenomenon seemed to be learning their routines in one day, it's an interesting comparison.

The entire first episode is also available for free on iTunes right now.

I was a little surprised at the lack of respect shown to Jeff McBride and Franz Harary by some of the contestants.

And it doesn't seem like a good idea to openly ridicule one of the judges in front of everyone, as Ant did to McBride in this episode.

I wonder what they'll say when they first meet Max...

I haven't watched the show yet...I'm getting it via iTunes. I'll have more to say after I've watched. Looking forward to it, though.

John,

Do they have an extra bone in their censored that allows this to be so? How is this claim substantially different from the famous Nick the Greek (I think that was him) blunder when he said African Americans made better runners because of their genetics. Do you believe it is genetics? Hormonal? Or is this just based on your feelings (professional, not trying to imply anything) for a student who happens to be female?

I have been teaching magic for well over 20 years. I have seen how boys/girls/men/women learn and perform. Here is what I have observed:

As a rule, females are more careful technicians than men. They spend more time focused on the elegance of the technique and perfection of the move. They tend to learn quicker as they are more willing to observe the model and attempt to replicate it.

Men, on the other hand, seem more easily able to stand up and bluff their way through a routine, letting personality and chutzpah cover technique. They more eagerly want to "get their hands on things" rather than observe, analyze, and apply.

Have their been exceptions to these observations? DEFINITELY!!!

But, I have worked with THOUSANDS of students. This is what they have taught me. When I work with a group of all male students, it is a different approach from when I work with all female. When I watch them perform, there are often different approaches in their manner of interaction - the men more "performing" the females, often, "sharing." I have seen these qualities in both genders, but overall I would tend to characterize the "sharing" dynamic as slightly more of a female trait.

But ultimately, the personality of the student is the greatest determinant of their success or failure. While I may see trends in gender populations, I have never seen anything exhibited consistently and exclusively from one gender over the other that would indicate the potential of any superiority in the magic arts.

To say that women can be superior based on the fact they have a censored seems to me to either be an oversimplification or just plain wrong.

Now, if you want to couch the argument in terms of qualities other than gender, we might be able to agree. But we would have to acknowledge then that gender - which is the basis of your assertion - plays no part.

If it did, then the most famous magicians in history would be female, no? If it did, then the quality of performances by female magicians would consistently be better than that of any of their male counterparts. Or does that open up the issue of oppression by the patriarchal authority?

I think that if women were clearly better magicians than men, there would be a lot more female magicians and far fewer male magicians. Saying that women make better magicians is like stating that they make better musicians. It's obviously false.
