Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
I do like toilet humor, as much as the next guy. Really.
However, I hadn't heard of this prop before, and I would have thought an answer (or a description) would have been more....forthcoming...if you will.
I'll just;
Sit here broken hearted....

Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
It was, Richard
They all kind of are....but see what's been started?
You know the frustration one feels when no one takes them seriously, or they can't get a straight answer to a straight question...?
I just want to know what the damn thing is.
Mr. Ash, you're the one selling it, I would have thought you'd have answered by now.
I can't be alone, not knowing what this prop is all about...can I?

Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
The "Conjurer's Commode" was Ben Martin's variation on Ed Marlo's seminal "Cardician's Crapper". Which in itself was highly derivative of Vernon's "Thaumaturgist's Toilet" (described in the expurgated edition of Hugard & Braue's "Expert at the Card Table" as Charlie Miller's "Prestidigitator's Pooper"). Vernon got the notion from Larry Grey, the "Dizzy Wizard"....with his "Wizard's Wizzer". No idea where Larry Grey got it from...though there's speculation that he cribbed it from "Manuel, Master of the Mighty Dollar". Earlier in his career (before hitting on the magic theme), Manuel was known as "Manuel, Master of the Mighty Colon". The less said about that act, the better....though I *will* say it was a solid knockoff of LePetomane's classic act.**
I'm sorry. I can't resist potty humor.
Mr. Ash! Calling Mr. Ash!
** It's rumored that Josef Pujols ("LePetomane") always claimed that when compared to other acts, his was a breeze...
Sorry...I just couldn't leave well enough alone...

Speaking of which, I believe DeKolta cleaned up the act a bit, resulting in "Buatier's Bidet".

I think that building a card fountain into a miniature toilet could be very funny ... somewhere. On Mars, perhaps.

Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
I guess I have one of the other 24 of these. Never used it. I assume the other purchasers never used it either.
Attempting to have his catalogue to be similar to Ken Brooke,Ben Martin had the descriptions of the effects pretty brief without giving away the climax. Just a lot of hype how hilarious the routine was and the quality of the props.
Briefly, A card is selected. The magician opens this wooden box and takes out a small vaudville-like eisel and cards that read "Presenting", etc.... then take out a doll house commode. You have a small roll of toliet paper and tweezers. You reach into the commode with the tweezers and remove this brown mini-poo. Open it (it is really a plastic pill capsule under the brown puddy)and inside is a tiny playing card duplicate of the choosen card.

Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
Rene isn't kiding. I have one as well, having acquired it from a collection. It's a beautiful domed wooden box with a brass plate denoting the title. There are numerous props inside, all of high quality. As they say "It's the journey, not the destination". The fun is in all of the little bits with the miniature bathroom props that provides the entertainment. The payoff is not something I'd do for most audiences. I have a friend who has offered me large sums of money for it, but I won;t part with the thing...I'm leaving it to him in my will.

"All of high quality" ... even the fake poo?

Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
I try to make sure my audiences are unaware of such things, but I always feel more confident with high-quality fake poo. The stuff from the East Coast shops just doesn't handle right, and the experience leaves a bad taste in my mouth...er, I mean....
Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
sorry for the delay in responding. Rene is right about this.

Re: BEN MARTIN STUDIOS-THE CONJURER'S COMMODE
That's REALLY funny.
A very classy card trick for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Very commercial.
Unfortunately, a crappy trick, in the end.
Whoa! Goodnight!
I'm here all week. Drive safely!
Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction....
Thanks everyone for the answers, and comments.
Now, I'm off to Vegas for the WMS.
Say hi, if you see me. I get lonely...and love meeting new folks.
Cheers,
Mike
