Al Cohen --Memoirs

Postby Guest » July 16th, 2007, 9:27 pm

Just finished Al Cohen's column in the Aug issue. This column has fascinating snippets about Muhammad Ali, Doug Henning and Bush Sr. It's a must read guys and gals.

It's a favorite of mine too!
Thanks everyone. It's getting harder to remember all of the stories, but I keep trying.

Perhaps Al can tell us what tricks for eg George Bush snr purchased? Or is that confidential?

Well, one of the tricks Bush Sr. purchased from Al was my effect, "Tsunami."

Thanks Bob,

I wonder if it was one of the tricks Al mentioned he kept on being phoned about by the President.....lack of clarity of instructions, or lack of brain power?...just kiddin

It was probably the lack of clarity--

Now here's an absolutely true story: shortly after Al told me that GB Sr. had purchased a "Tsunami," I was going across the Canadian/U.S. border with several hundred of them on my way to sell at a convention. The U.S. Custom guys looked at them and asked me in for an interview -- right under a picture of then president GB Sr.

I explained that it was a magic trick AND that the Prez had just purchased one. I gave them Al's phone number and said you can call him and ask him if you don't believe me. My argument was that if the Prez bought one -- it must be okay and not some sort of prohibited importation.

The guys just laughed, told me it was the best tale they'd heard all week and sent me on my way. That was back when U.S. Customs officers had a sense of humor. They've since lost it.
