MAGICOL #161

Postby Dustin Stinett » November 30th, 2006, 3:12 pm

The November 2006 issue of MAGICOL, the Journal of the Magic Collectors Association, is at hand. The highlights of this number include:

The color cover (and accompanying feature article) is of Edgar C. Stowells Chinese Torture Cabinet. Tad Wares article bears the title of Stowells Vaudeville act, Stowells Oriental Oddities, but the article focuses primarily on this particular illusion. Those of us in the Mark Wilson Generation of magicians will recognize it as the Divided into Four illusion. Mr. Ware goes into depth on the history of Stowells creation from the Vaudevillians performances through Mark Wilsons, and then the authors acquisition and restoration of the equipment. Its a terrific read that includes a color photo foldout of the illusion in performance.

Clay Shevlins Librarium Magicum continues with another foray into the world of bibliographies. Hopefully, as been his habit thus far, Clay will share this piece with Genii Forum readers.

Anne Davenport brings to bear her considerable knowledge of the Maskelynes in a short but no less intriguing piece. Regarding an 1899 letter from J.N. Maskelyne to Harry Kellar that was reproduced in MAGICOL #159, Ms. Davenport comes to a completely different conclusion (as all readers were so invited to do) than did John McKinven who offered his interpretation of the letters meaning in May.

The second half of (Associate Editor) Dan Waldrons On the Hunt with Robert Lund is my favorite piece in this issue. This wonderfully written narrative reminds us that there are so many wonderful stories out there that should be captured (be it in print or another medium) lest they be lost to times relentless march.

There is a short remembrance of Billy McComb (with accompanying photo of a young, dashing Billy) as well as a couple of mysteries for readers to solve. One, a photo the subject of which is the mystery, could earn a lucky winner a years free membership in the MCA.

And, as usual, there are Publisher/Editor David Meyers Notes & Comments. One in particular caught my rapt attention: Apparently Jimmy King, Sr. of Mak-Magic will be releasing the U.F. Grant lecture films on DVD soon. Mr. King is the son-in-law of Gen Grant. I, for one, am looking forward to this trip in Mr. Peabodys Wayback Machine.

This is just a sample of what youre missing if you are not a member of the MCA. For just $25 you can receive this fine quarterly magazine as well as the privilege of registering for the annual Magic Collectors Weekend (next May the MCA will be honoring Jim Steinmeyer).

For more information, email the MCA at magic.collectors@sbcglobal.net.

And usuaully the night before the MCA convention a local magic club hosts a GREAT magic flea market at the hotel. Most of the attendees are already in town for the convention so it makes for a great evening.Hope the tradition continues in 2007.
