Dai Vernon: A Biography
Dai Vernon: A Biography
This book is on amazon.com for $24.95 but it says that it is an abridged version. Does anyone know if a different version was published for the public?
Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
There is only one version of the book.
It appears Amazon has some problems with the listing. Right now the Vernon bio is marketed together on a page with a lot of AA books! And if you click on the link to the "audio" version of the Vernon bio - of which there isn't one - you get taken to an (abridged) audio version of an AA book.
I doubt that the book is being discounted for Amazon, so if you order with the way their page is set up now, I've no idea what you'd actually end up getting.
Perhaps Gabe Fajuri can get the listing corrected on Amazon.

Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
This is a definite computer problem, the Amazon computer seems to think it's a version of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. The only conceivable reason I can think of is that the publisher's description refers to it as a "lush portrait" of Vernon's life. In any case, if you want to buy it through the mail, you can get it directly from the Browser\'s Den in Toronto, autographed by the author.Originally posted by once a magician:

(I am acquainted with the author, the owner of the store, and the city of Toronto, but receive no compensation from any of them. )
Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Hello Forum Folks,
There are indeed problems with the Amazon listing of the Vernon biography, both price-wise and description-wise. I have been pestering the folks on Amazon for over a week to correct the listing with little success. Hopefully the requisite changes will be made soon.
The book has sold quickly and the first edition will be out of print soon. Be sure to get your copy (from your local dealer or from Squash) before they're gone!
Best Regards,

Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Actually, the problem is due to the fact that the book has two different ISBNs!!!
If you have the book, have a look to the ISBN on the rear dustjacket, in the barcode. This is 0-9744681-5-0, which is the correct one (if you search on Amazon.com, or at Barnes & Noble with this number, you can find Mr. Ben's biography of Vernon).
However, if you OPEN the book and check the cataloguing information (fourth page), the ISBN is recorded as 0-9780675-0-9.
I am intrigued on how this may have happened: a typo? The difference between the two ISBNs is substantial, in my opinion. The problem may be, however, somewhere else: the "5-0" ISBN (dustjacket) seems to be somewhat related to an AA's title, while the "0-9" one doesn't seem to match any book in existence...
I'm puzzled and amused...

Two ISBNs?
Darn it now you got me interested in the book for that alone.

Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Without getting into a technical discussion of ISBN numbers, let it suffice to say that the first number on the page is for the Canadian edition of the book, and the second one is for the American (Squash Publishing) edition of the book. The error on Amazon is entirely Amazon's.
A very limited number of the first printing of the book was produced with a Canadian imprint, hence the Canadian ISBN. There are very few copies of this edition left. Should anyone have interest in a copy, please contact me at info@squashpublishing.com.
In fact, there are very few copies of the book left in print as I write this - Canadian or American edition. If you have any interest in owning a first edition, be sure to act quickly and make a purchase.

Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Gabe,
Congratulations on a terrific book! I am thoroughly enjoying it, and very happy to hear about its success (thus ensuring us of the publication of the second volume --[are there ultimately to be 2, or 3?]--) Just out of curiosity, can you tell us how many copies were initially printed?
Thanks!

Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
We hope to have volume two - of two volumes - ready in 2008.
Today's Washington Post carries a very flattering review of volume one:

Additionally, the Amazon listing has been (mostly) corrected. Whew!

Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Hi Qwerty, according to Richard Kaufman, all of us are going to have to wait roughly two years for the sequel to the Vernon biography. I say we strap David Ben to a chair in a locked room with a word processor until he finishes it. Food can be slid under the door...
Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Have there been any reviews of this book by other Vernon scholars?

Stephen Minch, who wrote the first 3 Vernon Chronicles, reviewed it for M-U-M...
Re: Dai Vernon: A Biography
Leonard I'm willing to try anything. Two years is a long time. I just might be done with The Vernon Touch by then.

Six copies of the remaining copies have been sold, so act fast forum members!
2000 copies of the first edition were printed; of these, 300 were produced with a Canadian imprint.

How can one tell an American imprint from a Canadian imprint???

There's a different publisher's name on the Canadian books, and a different publisher's logo.

As a seller, doesn't Gabe have to post his full name, address, phone #, etc? :D

Richard, you are forgetting that Gabe Fajuri is the Agatha Christie of his generation.
