Thanks for the posts...I'd never seen Ken Brooke before. Question.....did HE originate the paperballs in a hat (box) or did Slydini?

Though Ken Brooke may not be as well known by the general public, he is a bit of a legend amongst UK magicians.

Wonderful to see these clips. They were part of a series of dealer films made when Ken was working for Harry Stanley's unique Studio. BUT they are not at all showing what Ken was like. He was one of the funniest comedy magicians I've ever known. A good example was the cups and balls. Ricky Jay and I were with Ken in a pub when he did the cups and the routine, altho the same moves, was loaded with bits and interaction with the spectators that had them in stitches the whole time.

What a pleasure to see these!

It is indicative of Ken Brooke's srtistry and scholoship that he performs the Slydini Paper Balls in Hat exactly the way Slydini does.

Pete, Have you got any more stories, like the ones you posted in the old thread. It would be great to hear more about Ken's comedy, personality, shop, magic...etc.. in fact anything? :)

Matt, Bear in mind that Ken had personal lessons from Slydini, who, of course could only teach exactly how he did it.

Also Matt, if you're at Blackpool this year, ask Bob Swadling about the day Ken invited Bob and Valerie to London to show them around and to show them the bits and gags he did.

One highlight was taking Valerie into a high class haberdashery and asking to see the expensive ladies nylons (apparently for Valerie), which much to the chagrin of the proprietress, Ken proceeded to open, rip with a fingernail (as though testing for quality) and discard, demanding to see others.

Of course Ken was really buying them for the thread, so it didn't matter if he ripped them before purchase.

But that's only one of many, many episodes of a fun packed day.
