What am I going to do with you and your RJ "Jones" Clay? Quaker (QTG), one of my company's clients on the retail side, is a fine company with very high standards. And I think it's a nifty spot.

Well, for starters, Dustin, I would immediately disable your "Clay/Jay Comment Alert" program, which should at least enable you to work in peace during the day. :D

I love ya, bro, and am looking forward to our tea and crumpet group get-together next week, but, Jay's selling instant oatmeal for chrissakes! That's the equivalent of Charles Bertram selling bain de [censored] in Paris in the late 1890s.

'Nuff said. So disable that program and move on. Heigh ho!

Ditto

And just whats wrong with instant oatmeal?!? Its sales help pay the bills around Casa de Dustins, so RJs selling instant oatmeal is okay by me! (And Im sure his accountant agrees as well. QTG is a Pepsico company; that means deep pockets.)

That doesnt much sound like oatmeal to me, and I dont think I want to know what it is. Of course, as the Quaker spot shows us, not everything is as it appears (so instant oatmeal isnt as bad as it sounds).

Your Jones wins because you enjoy czar status. (Sigh.)

But in closing I would say that, when it comes to selling instant oatmeal, res ipsa loquitur.

Hasn't almost every big name magician done promotion for some product? I don't understand what the problem is.

Point taken, Jim. Now tell me the name of another such big name magician who has so publicly and repeatedy expressed extremely elitist sentiments.

My Clay/Jay Comment Alert program tells me that the E word was used in reference to Ricky Jay again.

Im not sure how Rickys alleged elitist sentiments about magic, magicians, and secrets would carry over to his acting career.

Fodder for table talk next week?

If you really want me to spell it out, I will - but it could be painful if I take the gloves off. :)

Yes, if the guys won't mind. By the way, you might want to review the video re the "book handling" issue we discussed, since John can certainly opine on proper book handling techniques.

Some of you guys are nuts.

Ricky is an actor and has management that gets him work that pays a lot more than throwing cards around.

You wish you could do commercial gigs!
Stay tooned.

Pete:

I don't begrudge Jay earning a living if he needs to do oatmeal commercials to live. For the moment, I won't say much else other than this: when Jay is done selling oatmeal, cereal, toothpaste, toilet paper, Paul Masson wines and whatever else pays him money - and let's not forget, music to play cards by - Jay's mystique will have suffered as a result.

Lets not forget how he belittled himself with the voiceover work he did for Cisco Systems.

If the Quaker spot is an indication, then his mystique is not in any danger: The set is an illusion. Now, if he ends up in a Captain Crunch outfit selling kids cereal (or if I could get him to sell these by wearing one of our foam Trojan helmets), then his persona might suffer a ding or two. Somehow though, I dont see that happening.

As for the CD, weve gone over this before. Jay collects the music and, as he has done with some of his other interests, shared his knowledge on the subject (and in this case, the music as wellhave you read the booklet, watched the DVD, and listened to the CD?). It just so happens that, this time, the audiencepoker fanswas wider than with his other interests (loaded dice and unusual performers). Isnt it the dream of many people to make money on their passions? I just dont get what your issue is with the CD.

Alright, dammit Dustin, that's the final straw. The gloves are off.

Alas, I'm watching the NBA finals now so can't comment now .... :)

Regardless of the actors in it, that's a pretty crappy commercial.

Three comments:

1. Many U.S. actors do Europe-only comercials that they wouldn't dream of doing if they were to be aired in the U.S., for example Uma Thurman's series for Virgin Cable.

2. The theme of the commercial in question is magic (or a related one -- optical illusion).

3. That particular illusion was constructed and displayed about two years ago at an optical illusion show at London's Hayward Gallery.

Momi had one the last time I went (which was about ten years ago). Great fun, but the last thing I needed was an illusion that made my head hit the ceiling.

Happens all the time...

Take care, Ian
