Magic Timeline
I needed to learn how to use a new web-based timteline tool for work. So for practice, I decided to make a magic-based timeline using magicians and magic periodicals. Check it out at: Magic Timeline
If I decide to keep it online, I'll need to verify most of the dates.
If your having problems accessing it, try again later. Sometimes the Timeline site(http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/), which I load in, has issues.
Enjoy,
Joe

Re: Magic Timeline
Joe,
For a now-abandoned book project I did a timeline, pulling info from The Sphinx and other resources. Happy to send you a Word doc file if you're interested.
Just drop me an email.

Re: Magic Timeline
I'd love to take a look at it.
I don't see your email anywhere, feel free to email me. You should be able to see my email on this page (it's also on the Timeline page).
If you really want to be helpful :) , I'm getting ready to put the format that the Timeline tool accepts up on that page too.

Re: Magic Timeline
David sent me the timeline for his abandoned book project. It covers many many magic events from 1805 to 1997!
I'm in the process of converting it to XML in order to add it to the Online Magic Timeline . If anyone is interesting in helping, let me know. I can send you a few decades to convert :)

Re: Magic Timeline
Lots of new stuff at the Online Magic Timeline
Thanks to David Alexander for lots of entries from his abandoned book project (which I've included the full text as a link on the website). I've only completed adding entries up to 1900 to the timeline.
I also added the filtering and highlighting capability. By typing text in the appropriate boxes, it will either remove all events that do not have that text in the title or description (filtering) or highlight those events in color that do have that text.
I also added many more Magic Periodicals entries thanks to the Conjuring Arts Research Center website.
Hope you enjoy it!
Let me know what you think.

Re: Magic Timeline
Added events between 1900 and 1906 to the Interactive Online Magic Timeline , in case anyone is following along.
I've really been enjoying David's timeline as I'm going along. Lot's of interesting tidbits.
Additions and corrections to the timeline are welcomed!

Re: Magic Timeline
Joe,
Just a minor correction: You have it listed that Nate Leipzig began his professional career in 1903. It was actually towards the end of 1902 that he left home to get started in show business (though not immediately as a magician). The earliest mention of him is in the November 1902 Sphinx.

Re: Magic Timeline
Interactive Magic Timeline has entries added up to 1920. Be sure to click on the titles to see full descriptions.
Looking at the Magic Periodicals timeline, it looks like the year 1974 may have been the zenith of the twentieth century. Over 20 in publication being produced!
Suggestions, additions and corrections are appreciated.

Re: Magic Timeline
Joe,
I seem to be getting a JavaScript error on the page which is preventing the Timeline from loading properly.

Re: Magic Timeline
Looks like the site that hosts the actual Timeline code (simile.mit.edu) is down. I've had this happen before. If I get time, I'll move all the stuff over so I don't depend on them.
Just give it again a try in a few hours.

Re: Magic Timeline
I moved all the code under my yahoo account. It's slower, but now it doesn't depend on any outside code so hopefully it will not have any more of these problems. If anyone wants to host this timeline on a better server, I'd gladly provide all the code and data.
Let me know if your still having problems.

Re: Magic Timeline
Joe,
Another minor correction (do you hate me yet?): Nate Leipzig died on October 13th, 1939, not the 18th.

Re: Magic Timeline
The Interactive Magic Timeline now has all of David Alexander's abandoned book project events entered.
I've started working on a timeline for Magic Books as my next project. We'll see how that goes.
Enjoy,
Joe Pecore

I'm happy that Joe was able to use my research for the now-abandoned book project...a good use for many hours of work.
