Looks quite decent. I would try to break some of the longer columns up if possible.
And perhaps look into a more "liquid" design that would allow more information on the screen without needless scrolling.

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Hi Chris,
Eventually when there are more places I will probably show 50 random places per category on the main page, and the complete list alphabetically divided when displaying a single category (I am actually working on it now).
Didn't understand what you means with "liquid" (an example would be great). I chose this design and usability (using web 2.0 but backwards compatible) method so that users will see everything without going back and forth between screens.
Thanks for the input :)

Well, I mean not going with a fixed width. For instance, this very forum is liquid in that the text/width adjust for browser window size. By going with a fixed width, you get a tiny strip of website in the middle of the screen for those who run larger screens/higher resolutions. If one has a really fancy layout that must look absolutely the same at all resolutions, the fixed width is the way to go. But with a ton of information needing to be presented at once (as with your site), it's perhaps a good idea to "go liquid" and maximized the screen real estate to show more.Originally posted by Haim Schlesinger:

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Chris,
Now I understand. I have considered it when I started, but for now I decided to offer two screen resolutions: 800x600 (the default) and 1024x768. I might change this in the future but there is a design/programming problem regarding finding out the screen resolution the user is currently using.
You can use the two "links" on the right side of the upper menu bar on the site to change the width of the site's design.
Thanks for the idea :)

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
You might also want to list the magicians alphabetically, by last name.
Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Hi Lior,
Thanks for the compliments :)
I have added your place to the directory.
You can also add any site you would like yourself. Regsitering takes less than a minute and you can add as many places as you wish.
Best regards,
Haim

Hi Amos,
Thanks for the idea.
Currently each category is listed alphabetically by the title given to it (which can be a name or anything else).
Best regards,
Haim

Two new features :) :
You can now filter not only by country and state, but also by rating.
Also added a top 10 feature (measured by user interest).

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Still way too much scrolling.
Perhaps make the categories randomly show 5-10 of each item and use ajax or something to have a "more" button that'll expand just that category.

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Chris,
I get your point but think that the convenience of having it all on one page is more important (at least until there are more places), so I will keep this design for now.
Thanks,
Haim

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Well, you're already using a method to expand the link categories. Why not use it for the categories themselves with a representative sample?
That would not be putting them on another page anymore than the links are currently on another page from the index.
Having and index with that amount of scrolling just doesn't come off very well.
The "all on one page thing" works well for smaller amounts of data, but I suspect you're going to add much more which will only exacerbate the irritation.
If your site was a blog or something like that, with folks seeing newer stuff as it bubbles up to the top, I'd think that would be ok. But for an informational site, that amount of scrolling is kind of obnoxious.

Re: Magic-Info.Org - the center for all magical places
Update:
I have taken Chris's idea and implemented it.
Now the main page (and also the filtered views) show up to 20 places per category. If there are more places in a category there is a link (show all) that lets you request the whole list for the given category.
The only exceptions are the search results and the top 10 pages.
Thanks Chris
