Magical Life of Long Tack Sam

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Magical Life of Long Tack Sam

Postby pixsmith » December 15th, 2004, 8:45 am

beginning to air on Sundance Channel again this month.

From the blurb:
(NR, 2003) Filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming examines the life of her great-grandfather, a vaudevillian magician and an acrobat. (1h 30m)

Next airings

Thursday 12/16 9AM CST

Sunday 12/19 5:30 PM CST

I have not seen this yet -- I am _supposed_ to have the Sundance Channel in my cable package but Comcast and I seem to have different definitions of "included." ;)

There is a nice bit of info on the web as well at
http://www.longtacksam.com/

Just a note that the Sundance channel is showing this again. I watched it for the first time, and it's most interesting.

In case no one has yet noted this, Anne Marie Fleming's movie is now a book, and what a book. It reads like a graphic novel, all cartoons and photos, as it lays out the fascinating life and family of Long Tack Sam. Available at Borders, etc..

If you're in Chicago, you'll find it in stock at Quimby's.

A really neat book, as Steve said. I think it's even better than the film.

I didn't know it is now a book.
I'll have to check it out.

The doc is great.
I finally saw it a year or so ago.

We were suppose to meet up with her
the last time the collectors was
in Chicago so she can interview dad.
But she was held up with other things.
So she did a phone interview instead.

She and I had a great conversation as
well.

We have quite a bit in common besides
being part-Asian.

I haven't seen the film, but did buy the book at Border's and enjoyed it. I would love to know more about the actual "act". Does anyone know of any more writings about Sam?

Maybe Richard can add this one to the sidebar too.
