I recently bought a subscription to ProQuest historical newspapers -- this is a searchable full-text database of files of the NY Times, the LA Times, the Chicago Trib, and other newspapers.

From the TV Schedule of the NY Times, 3/31/1978
8:30 (5) Merv Griffin Show: Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oleg Cassini, Starland Vocal Band, Max Mavin [sic], guests
Now that's a show I wish I had seen.

A photo of Max on that show is in the March 1979 issue of MUM (featuring Max on the cover). Laudatory quotes from Griffin and Gabor are also included, so it seems the performance made quite an impression.

Max's last name was also mispelled "Mavin" in one of the features he wrote for MAGIC.
