Magician And Cardsharp Review

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Magician And Cardsharp Review

Postby Sam Kesler » August 9th, 2005, 8:11 am

David Blaine gives a highly favorable book review (Grade: A) of Magician and the Cardsharp in current issue of Entertainment Weekly. And with a photo from the book of Dai Vernon doing a faro shuffle.

The photo is by Bill Woodfield--there's a microscopic credit in the gutter.
The rumor, by the way, is that the review was written by "Ratso," the guy who ghostwrote Blaine's book Mysterious Stranger.

"Ratso" is Larry Sloman, the guy who used to call himself a "garbologist," analyzing Bob Dylan's trash to see what he could find out about his songs. (He suspected a crystal meth influence!)

He was also the editor of "High Times" magazine and is a featured character in the Kinky Friedman detective novels.

The Magician and the Cardsharp as well as The Man Who Killed Houdini are both reviewed in today's (October 9, 2005)Washington Post's Book World. Here is the URL but you may have to register with the Washington Post to read it:

Has anyone else read it? I found it to be a good read that kept my interest. There were segments when I thought, would a person who wasn't interested in magic and/or gambling stay with it? Mr. Johnson did some incredible research.

One of my concerns was that Johnson would paint a glowing picture of Vernon. Fortunately, he showed him as he was - a man who would forsake his family for the pursuit of magic.

Is "Ratso" in fact Larry Sloman and did Sloman in fact write Blaine's book? What sources are there for this information?

Ratso is Larry Sloman. That's common knowledge.

As for Ratso's contribution to "Mysterious Stranger" that is spelled out plainly in the Acknowlegements page. Not exactly a secret.
