* TRAITOR - how would you feel about it?

Postby Guest » March 7th, 2004, 8:43 am

A purely hypothetical question:

Imagine that you knew of a mentalist on this board whom you respected and used to purchase stuff from and who appeared to be nice. Now imagine that undeniable proof comes up showing that he has gone behind your back and that he denies and lies blatantly and repeatedly about having taken definite action to damage the mystery of our art and to damage your and your fellow performers mysteries.

Imagine further that his reason for trying to damage the mystery is mainly to make a quick buck and to gain TV recognition, and that his reason for lying to you is to not loose respect and of course to be able to make yet another buck by selling his stuff to you.

In this hypothetical situation, what would you feel?

Would you respect him?

Would you encourage him to continue with what he does by supporting him and buying his stuff?

Would you want him to be part of the magic or mentalism circles and the mentalism community?

I'm really curious, what would you feel?

I cannot help but feel that this is not a purely hypothetical question

Well, theoretically, I'd probably feel the same way I do when I see someone who posts, anonymously, a harshly critical attack against someone. I'd feel, this person doesn't deserve my respect.

That's just theoretically, of course.

Richard, John and Pete - are you implying it may actually be a fact?

Surely, one of 'our own' wouldn't do that? After all magic and mentalism has given to him and our magic friends around the world, not to mention the joy it spreads to the audiences?

How could someone possibly try to damage magic and mentalism intentionally and, in addition, make money from it by lying to us about it? Would someone really do such a thing?

Now, but if undeniable proof turned up, is Pete the only one who wouldn't respect him anymore? And is that all? Would you accept that he is part of your circles? Where he, quite possibly, is getting more ideas on what to 'do' and keeps selling his stuff to your friends? And, quite possibly, turns to your next audience to do damage?

Or should we just let him go on?

Honestly, what can we do? Lynch him? We can shun him as most will, but if he is a personal friend, can we truly totally isolate a close friend for doing what we all want. ie. to make money and get camera time?

Honestly depends what he's exposing too I guess...

Shun him..don't buy any of his products ( if there are any) don't attend lectures/shows..offer no support whatsoever. Further,I wouldn't support any who support him.

I don't know that the community has the integrity to support that position. It does, as you know condone and support those who take the work of others. And then even rallies to protect those who sell 'borrowed' technology.

Nebulous claims made by the anonymous are fairly easy to dismiss.

If you've got facts, share them (preferably using your actual name)

Otherwise, I'm with Jeff here.

Chris,

I don't think file is actualy making any claims. He's asking all of us to consider a "hypothetical" and consider our reactions to it. To "suspend our disbelief" as it were.

Yes, Timothys makes a good description; "to suspend our disbelief". I'm not making any claims. I have not mentioned anyone nor even specifically what kind of "damaging action" it could be.

But ok, to make things easier, let's say the damaging activity is severe exposure of secretes/techniques/moves used by practicing performers. This done on national TV. And then blatantly lying about having done it, and still doing it while pushing products to you and me.

Then, if undeniable proof turned up, what you would feel and do?
