New and improved readings

Postby Guest » May 29th, 2006, 4:09 am

I hope I am not going to put anyone's nose out of joint with this post. I hope it just stimulates some genuine comments.

I have been thinking about readings in general and I have come up with a couple of questions and I would like your honest opinion.

For many years people have been conducting readings from genuine psychic readings through to pure cold-reading. Relatively recently there have been materials produced to help the potential reader develop the skill of reading. What I would like to know is whether any of these books have made a significant difference to the hit or success rate of the reader? Do any of these methods produce a superior reading from the perspective of the sitter compared with previously? Are we, in fact, only adding more and more refinements, possibilities and complexities? Are they anything more than clever-sounding concepts which, while they may have validity, do not greatly add to the sum of the experience?

Les,

I think the answer for you is that it all depends whether you are an actual reader or a magician. Almost everything you read from a "magician's stand-point" is NOT usually the way an actual reading takes place. A reading is NOT about how many hits you get right or giving them a bunch of generalized crap about their past. It is about the relationship, the connection you develop with your client and the experience they have with this. Few books touch on that and all most magicians care about is simply cold reading.

From Ford
First. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by cold reading. The late Herb Dewey used it interchangeably with psychic readings
Other use it to equate with stock readings.
I simply feel a cold reading is the same as the way actors use the term. Doing a reading with no preperation
I've read most of the material, that's come out on the subject Including some privastely circulated material
I find some of it helpful, others not so much
The material written by readers who do readings for money seem to be more helpful than the ones written by magicians for other magicians
If you write me privately I'll be glad to tell you which I found useless
Paul Alberstadt is correct , reading is more about the relationship between reader and querant than accuracy
I recall a young woman who came to see me two or three times a year for a decade. Saying, how come none of your predictions for me come true?
I laughed amd asked why she came. Her reply" I enjoy talking to you
She's still a client
In my own defense, other clients would regale you with stories of my accuracy

I wasn't really trying to make a distinction here about stock and psychic readings. That wasn't my intention.

It is simply to ask if what has been published (or otherwise) to date significantly adds to the experience that the sitter has, however the information is said to be derived.

There seems little that is published on how to develop intuitive readings (other than just 'do it') but there have been many books (by comparison) which offer everything from stock readings through to demographic probabilities and psycholingustic methodologies.

My question is this: Has the performer/reader increased in hit-rate/credibility/accuracy as a result of any of the modern texts or not. Are we still getting (on average) and 80% success rate?

The implied question is: If there has been no significant improvement in sitter perception of readers, then why bother with the refinements?

I must agree with Paul, it is all relationship and empathetic connection -- not a demonstration of "hits."

One read ALL of us can touchstone upon is "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Its principles are as valuable as Dewey's word strings -- which are brilliant.

Let's face it -- one of the wealthjiest readers in the business of client attachment and problem solving is Tony Robbins...who demystifies the process and coaches it as "personality science" (my words.)

And -- as usual - no one book or formula will fit all performers - thank the stars that be.

Only the Skeptics talk about "hits."

Well this approach is quite new to me. New in the sense that I understand from what you are saying that readings seem then to be a mixture of therapy and counselling with whatever divination system just used as a vehicle.

Have I understood this correctly?

I know a little bit about this subject

Readings are about "communications" which entails empathy and as Brad Henderson stated so well "a dance" in which Reader & Sitter move about an issue in such a way as to lend benefit to one another; the Reader, learning (if they have a half-way opened mind) while the sitter is able to use you as the sounding board required at the moment.

I've found that most of the Readings I do are nothing other than speding some positive time with lonely people. If I got rid of the cards and time limit, I'd be a male escort I guess... :D

"Hits" and the myth of "prediction" are concepts embraced by magicians and cynics. Though there is an important reason to have the client believe you are "in touch" with them and can "see into them" it is more akin to how a child feels when addressed by the parent who seems to have eyes everywhere and simply "knows" what is what. There's nothing "mystical" involved but there is alot of implied psychological influence that even the pedigreed and paper trained counselors of the world manipulate to their advantage... it's simply the natural path assumed by the sitter when trust and hope are conveyed.

As you know Les, I think two of the best tools for "Psychic Develope" to come out in the past year are Millard's PSYCHIC SKILLS WORKSHOP and Kenton's MIND READING tome. Aside from learning to work with and within a legit system such as the Tarot or Numerology, the ideas and principles shared in these two compilations are pure dynamite!
