Magic Spam

Postby Guest » February 23rd, 2005, 6:00 pm

Hello, I just received an unsolicited e-mail from extrememagi.com.
It was directed to an e-mail address I only use on the Genii Forum.
This leads me to believe that someone has gone through and harvested e-mails from this forum in order to send magic spam.

I thought I should alert the other members of this forum, and the administrators.

I got it too, but do not know whence it came.

I peacefully added their address to my spam filter and will now proceed to get on with my life. :)

Here is my reply:

Right

a) I have never signed up for any service you offer and have never heard of you - this makes sending me this email illegal according to the CAN-SPAM act

b) you have no clear opt out process - this makes your email illegal according to the CAN-SPAM act

c) you don't have a physical address on your email, that is illegal and against the CAN-SPAM act

Take me off your list and never contact me again

Do two unsolicited identical posts from Mr Goat consitute SPAM?

I have not received that spam yet.

It might be because I changed my Genii Forum profile for:
"Keep your email address viewable to others when you post notes?" to "No, but allow members to mail me through this board "

Unsolicited commercial email is the definition of spam.

Dual posting on a message board was just crass stupidity.

It was early, I'd only had one coffee. Get off my back man.

Gosh, I though I was the only person to get this great deal offered to me.

Who'd have thought that a lot of people would get the limited time offer to buy 150 feet of invisible thread for $75?

I got this e-mail also. I put it in my spam filter.

I would never buy something that was e-mailed to me. I don't know how these people make money. I guess some people do buy things from unsolicited e-mails.

I'm really surprised! You mean you don't send off the deposits for the money that the cousin of the nephew of the late, tragically murdered finance minister of Nigeria sends you periodically?

About the Nigerian scam... man, you have to see Dean Cameron's show! I don't want to spoil the fun, but have a look at his website: Nigerian Spam Scam Scam and you'll be in stitches.

Basically, this talented comedian (no magic, altough the show is endorsed by Penn Jillette) replied to a "Nigerian Scam" email and on the web site you can see all emails back and forth...

Ok, back to magic, now ;)

For completeness - I wrote to Extrememagi pointing out the negative feelings their spamming was causing on this board.

Their reply

We purchased a mailing list and if you would not like to be on that list we will remove you. No harm no foul. We are trying to be as legitimate as possible.
Again I apologize for any inconvience we may have cause you.

Frankly, I don't get too worked up about spam. I find it less intrusive than a Viagra ad behind the batter at home plate and with electronic spam I can delete it - adjust my spam filters and move on. The Viagra ad just stays there.

Anyway, Mr Cressing's response is pure BS - must be a corporate "spokesperson" type. The Can-Spam Act is a joke I'll admit, but it takes about 30 seconds to comply with the provisions and any profession of legitimacy would certainly comply.

FWIW - I was fortunate enough to get 2 emails - one of which was to an address that has never been near this forum.

Later.....

It is a side issue from the main point here, but I nearly fainted with laughter at Marco's Nigerian Spam link above....

Calling Mr K

Richard, do you sell the email addresses on this list?

As that's the only way he 'bought' the email addresses.

Senor Goat,

There's always the chance that some fine, upstanding individual harvested the addresses here, the cafe, and anywhere else they could to create a "magic" spam list which they then sold to our fine spammeister.

That's very true.

I mean, in a way, I wouldn't be *that* pissed if Mr K did sell the list. After all it's provided FOC and takes money, time and effort to sustain. This board is so much better than any alternatives, that I would see a need to generate revenue.

But yes, your suggestion is very possible. Thanks.

That's likely to be the case. It's been done before. If anyone remember Terry Prisendorf's database from years ago, you'll know what I mean.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to harvest email addresses, package them up, and sell them to e-businesses who should know better -- this is 2005, after all. It just takes someone having no concern for the opinions of others, something certainly not hard to find these days. It is 2005, after all.

If Sir Richard did sell ad space like the cafe I would buy some. If everyone who reads and enjoys this forum would subscribe to Genii that would be a step in the right direction. If everyone who is signed on to the Cafe subscribed to Genii then Genii would be ##1. If everyone who advertises on the Cafe would put a link to Genii on their website that might help too.

Just a thought or two.

I would like to add my name to those who recieved the Spam.
I sent a nasty e-mail to that company pointing out that I did not ask for this e-mail, I will not buy from this company and it would be in his best intrest to remove me from his mailing list.
I recieved a nice e-mail back with apologies and a promise I will be taken off the list.

I've been in Blackpool (a town with no Internet connections if you can believe it), and have not seen this thread until now.
So, first, let me make it clear that I have not and have no intention of selling anyone's e-mail address obtained from this forum or anywhere else.
If the seller claimed he purchased the list, then it's possible some third party spent a lot of time harvesting e-mail addresses out of your posts and then sold them.
But, it wasn't me.
And, the majority of people on the Forum do not purchase Genii. I really wish they would.

Yep. Sounds about right.

Blackpool only got electricity a couple of years back. The whole town were out with their buckets ready for their share :)
