The first New York Magic Symposium (8/82)

Postby Steve Hook » January 19th, 2004, 10:17 am

Seems better to start a separate thread on one of Peter McCabe's excellent observations based on old copies of Genii. (Thanks for that post, Peter.)

The ad for the '85 NYMS was very enticing. But how about lineup for the 1st NYMS in '82:

Derek Dingle
Slydini
Paul Harris
Daryl
David Roth
Michael Ammar
Fantasio
Jeff McBride
Larry Becker
John Cornelius
Vito Lupo
Bob Read (who killed)
John Ferrentino
Joe DeLion
Levent

And I believe these folks were in the audience:

Michael Rubinstein
Paul Gertner
Howie Schwartzman
Don England
Jay Sankey
Ricky Jay
Bob Kohler
Tom Gagnon
Jamy Swiss
Darryl Harris
Herb Zarrow
Geoff Latta
Richard Kaufman
Ken Krenzel
Meir Yedid
Gary Ouellet

The attendance was limited to 350 or so (and they did turn away some who expected to register at the Roosevelt, including a poor fellow who said he'd come from South America), but I remember thinking that 2/3 of those attending were recognizable.

Who is missing from the audience or show list? Were you there?

Unfortunately, I was yet to be born. :)

You can add to the list of attendees Gary Kurtz, Sol Stone, and I think Mike Gallo and Mike Powers. It was an incredible convention, best I ever attended!

At that event an award was given to Willie Schneider for all he had done for so many in magic.

I was there even though I was only doing magic for six months or so and I didn't know most of the stars I still knew that this was something special ...

I was there too. One of the best conventions I ever attended (the first WMS in DC was also in that class). I attended every one of the NY Symps, and the second and third were also very good, then the quality dropped off until the relatively disastrous finale in '87.

I have a symp tee-shirt covered with autographs from the first couple of symps. Garcia, Dingle, Jennings, many more than I can recall offhand.

I really envy you Jamy. Now that T-shirt you have with those now-gone legends' autographs has a great value both sentimentally and economically.

All I have from the Symposium is the collection of 6 books that came out each year (well actually they're 5 and Spectacle, which we were told in the forum was part of the collection but then it was sold to another party and was sold separately).

I wish I had attended at least one of them! :(
