Ed Sullivan mentions Dick Himber

Postby Steve Hook » August 1st, 2004, 12:58 pm

Not sure if this was mentioned here before but I just noticed that on the 1st "The Very Best of Ed Sullivan" tape, Ed, hosting the 2nd Annual Harvest Moon Ball, tells the band director to, "Take it away, Dick Himber!"

The tape goes on to mention that this brief appearance was the first time Ed had hosted on television and it led to Ed getting the job of hosting a new show, "Toast of the Town". That show premiered on CBS on June 20th, 1948.

Himber once showed me a way to get through the NY subway turnstiles without paying.

Actually, you did pay, but earlier in the day you would "double pay" so the machine was one ahead. You would return to that same turnstile and tell your friend you could go through free. Which you did.

Unfortunately that doesn't work anymore with the new machines.
Stay tooned.
