WOW!!!

Thanks for posting that link, Richard.

Since it's giving me a bad case of "rock fever", I must now go and chant our unofficial state motto, "Lucky we live Hawaii" one hundred times.

Thanks A LOT.

Too bad you didn't live a little closer, Craig. Based on our limited correspondence, I suspect it'd be a pleasure to chat with you in person. Then again, do you surf? Maybe I should visit you in HI. How's that for an unwanted guest? :whack:

Oh yes, this thread. Has anyone here successfully joined? I wrote a while back asking to send payment by mail instead of Paypal, but no reply yet. Also had a chance to scan the first issue of their periodical at the Conference. Can't speak to the contents, but some of the authors are known and respected and the layout and typography looked good.

All the best,

Hi,i'm Crim
i live in Italy,
and i've just seen that wonderful site, which is conjuringarts.
I've seen that there are three membership options..
but living in Italy i don't know which is the best for me, because i can't consult phisically the library in New York.
Do you know if the virtual library is big?
And which membership do you suggest me?
Hoping for an answer of yours..
my best regards.

I met Bill Kalush in the Magic Circle library where he was doing some research and he showed me the portable version of the database, which is a thing of beauty.

Membership is not currently a financial possibility for me, but maybe one day.

Thank you Mr.Hatch
I'm very happy the library is so big..so i can consult it from Italy.
Still, which membership do you suggest me?
Sorry for the silly question, but i don't know if with the most expensive one, i can use all the benefits in Italy.

Mattia, I'm not sure that any level of membership provides off site access to the virtual library. I personally joined at the Charlier level in order to get the bi-annual publication, which should be outstanding in both content and format. If I lived in New York and could take advantage of the higher levels of membership and could afford to do so, I likely would. I assume that one can upgrade the membership level as deemed desirable, but am not sure of the details.

I'm always a more than a little leery of any library project that has a statement that they eventually plan to "digitize every work" in any given field. This could lead to some rather heavy consequences in terms of copyright issues.

Some would argue that under the fair use clause in the copyright law, this would be completely legal. This is not true as fair usage does nto cover complete works, but small segments of them.

There are several interesting copyright issues. One is that libraries are given some exemptions to copyright laws that the rest of us don't get. Another is that most of what would be interesting in a library like this would likely be out of copyright and in the public domain -- everything published before 1923, everything before 1963 which hasn't been renewed (the edition of Bobo's coin magic that Dover reprinted falls into this category), and everything published before 1977 without a copyright notice (like so many lecture notes). This isn't everything I'd like to read, but it's more than I _could_ read.

This is also my question, as the site doesn't make this point clear and emails are not being replied to
:(

Speaking with a friend, I understand that part of the library is accessible remotely, but I would appreciate a clarification from the organization.

Many thanks, ciao!

I didn't understand very well.
So because of the copyright i can't consult the material remotely, also if i'm subscribed?
Or i can consult remotely only part of the material.
Otherwise it's not worthy to make a subscription, for the people outside of NY.
I just want to understand if i subscribe form Italy, if there is some material which i can consult remotely.
Please help me, cause i love this whole idea, but i don't want to spoil a subscription which i wouldn't be able to use from my home!
Thanks

The website offers the following levels of membership:

Levels & Benefits
Charlier Level - $95/yr
Subscription to Gibecire
In-Library Access to the Alexander Database
10% Discount on Publishing Releases
Newsletter
Invitations to Special Events

Hofzinser Level - $245/yr
Subscription to Gibecire
In-Library Access to the Alexander Database
Hofzinser Level Online Access to AskAlexander.org
10% Discount on Publishing Releases
Newsletter
Invitation to Special Hofzinser Member Events
Discounts on Library Services

Erdnase Level - $495/yr
Subscription to Gibecire
5 Free Hours of Research done by Conjuring Arts Librarians
In-Library Access to the Alexander Database
Erdnase Level Online Access to AskAlexander.org
10% Discount on Publishing Releases
Newsletter
Invitations to Private Erdnase Member Events
Discounts on Library Services
Access to the Library Special Hours
Special Editions and pre-release copies of publications

I suppose the question is exactly what sort of onlline access is allowed by the "Hofzinser" and "Erdnase" levels. Too bad that the site doesn't explain this as remote access and knowing what kind of access you are getting is really critical to anyone who doesn't live in NY.

Here are what I hope to be some helpful answers to the questions posted here.

First, let me apologize on behalf of Conjuring Arts. As the website is new,
apparently all of the queries sent to us were lost in cyberspace and it wasn't until I
reviewed the Genii forum that we had any idea questions had come in and we,
regretfully, had not responded. That is being taken care of currently.

As for remote access for those who live out of state, or in other countries, YES,
at the upper levels of memberahip you will have selected access to
Alexander, the Library's database.

Hope that helps :)

I notice that Conjuring Arts now has some sample pages of the first issue of Gibecire online, including the table of contents. It's worth checking out.

Clay, et al. I joined on line and received my Gibeciere within a day or two - and it is a thing of beauty. I have only read the first article in it so far, and it was excellently done....the quality and feel of a scholarly journal. Bill Kalush and his staff have much of which to be proud. What with Genii, MAGIC, The Magic Circular, MUM and others like Antinomy etc, we are living in a time of plenty when it comes to written conjuring resources - but there will certainly be room for this welcome new arrival.

Note to those that go looking for the sample pages and get message "Not Found" after clicking on the link. There is a typo in some of the URLs pointing to the pages. Just replace the "pg" with "p" in the URL for the page and hit enter; it will pop right up.

Hello,

I am very much interested in becoming a member of the Conjuring Arts Research Centre. But my decision of whether to become a member and at what level will depend a lot on the kind of access to the digital library resources that a membership will offer.

I have sent two email messages to conjuringarts.org, asking for specifics about the different levels of membership, but haven't received a reply two months after my first email.

I have read this thread and the conjuringarts website quite thoroughly, but there is still one major question remaining.

I understand from the membership page that the Hofzinser and Erdnase levels of membership offer online access to the AskAlexander full-text database.

Living in Europe, I am not very interested in some of the added advantages of the Erdnase level, such as Library special hours or Erdnase Events.

So the crucial question for me, in order to decide between the two upper levels of membership, concerns the exact difference between the Hofzinser and the Erdnase level of online access.

Also, I have seen that the catalogue of the library's holdings can be accessed via the website. But is there any way of finding out which of the holdings have already been digitalized?

If anyone from the Conjuring Arts Research Center or anyone else 'in the know' is reading this, an answer would be very much appreciated.

Tilman,

I'm a Hofzinser level member, so I just took a look at what's available to me. In addition to a number of early magic books and instruction sheets, here's a list of the periodicals that I have available to me:

Abracadabra
Bat
Billboard
Bookie
Boy-American Magician
Conjurer's Chronicle
Conjurer's Monthly Magazine
Conjuriana
Conjuring Record
Conjurors' Magazine
Diebox
Eagle Magician
Edward's Monthly
Felsman's
G-D Truth about Magic
Genii
Gibeciere
Goldston Annual
Goldston's Magazine of Magic
Goldston's Magician
Goldston's Pantomime
Goldston's Quarterly
Hugard's Magic Monthly
Ibidem
Il Prestigiatore Moderno
Jinx
Journal of Magic History
L'Escamoteur
L'Illusionista
L'Illusionniste
Locke's Conjuror's
Magic Key
Magic Mag
Magic Mirror
Magic Wand
Magic: The Magazine of Wonder
Magical World
Mahatma
NCA
New Jinx
New Pentagram
New Tops
Osirian
Pacific Coast Magic News
Pentagram
Perennial Mystics
Phoenix and New Phoenix
Pierce's Magic World
Seance
Selbit's Wizard
Seven Circles
Spell Binder
Sphinx
Stanyon's
Syzygy
Thayers
Tops
Variety
Wizard

Also note that the website now states, for the Charlier level "NEW: Now includes trial access to a limited portion of AskAlexander Online." You might want to check that out -- I doubt there would be any difficulty upgrading your account later if you wish (though you may want to talk with them about it first).

Jim,

Thanks a lot for the information. That's an impressive list. Thanks also for pointing out the trial offer at the Charlier level. I had overlooked that.

Of course, I am still wondering about the advantages the Erdnase level might have over the Hofzinser level as far as full-text resources go and would be grateful for any additional information from anyone who is in a position to compare.

Also, Jim, may I conclude from what you wrote that access to books is still rather limited at present (at least at Hofzinser level)?

Thanks in advance to anyone filling us in on this!

Best regards, Tilman

Wow! The C.A.R,C. is now offering members a free, three day upgrade to the next level. I'm a Hofzinser member in his third day at the Erdnase level. It is wonderful, and I'm using my trial heavily, and I hope wisely. I'm not yet sure whether I'll upgrade, for I've used most of the sources for the research on which I'm engaged. The library is a great resource for those of us with little access to a great collection, and the top level of membership gives considerably better access to it!

Dear Tilman,

We are terribly sorry about this confusion. We believe we have responded to all email and certainly are looking forward to all new members. We have tried to determine if your email arrived and was overlooked, but because your full name or your email address are not indicated here, we can't check thoroughly.

We don't publish the list of what is accessible in AskAlexander at each level because the lists are subject to change, and do change. They are usually growing, but occasionally we must remove something. Mr. Maloney's list posted above is what's available at the moment, but it might vary slightly by the time you gain access. Please don't think we mean that the material's availability changes every day, it doesn't, it's just that we don't guarantee access to anything in specific.

Regarding your question about what is available at the Erdnase level that isn't at the lower levels: several runs of magic journals and a large collection of various Houdini related material. My estimate is the material regarding Houdini is about 30,000 pages and would be very difficult to find elsewhere. Books are not generally available. Although we have scanned many hundreds of books, we aren't making them available outside the library until we determine if they are public domain or obtain permission from the copyright holders.

I truly hope this corrects the error in communication and answers some of your questions. If you will either post here or send directly to me your email address and full name, I will check my email log to determine where your communications have gone. Thank you.

Dear Kenlynne,

Thanks a lot for your reply here.

I am very sorry if, by asking my questions in public, I have caused confusion or created the impression that the Conjuring Arts Research Center is generally difficult to reach.
Given the many possible reasons for an email not reaching its recipient, I do not suppose that any mistake was made on your part. That's one more reason why I should have attempted to reach you by telephone or letter before asking my questions here...
By now all my questions have been answered by you and other members (a big thank you to Jim Maloney) of the Genii forum and I am looking forward to becoming a member in the near future.
In the meantime congratulations on what is a very exciting and important project!
Also, my sincere apologies again. I have just sent you an email of similar content, but giving full name and contact details.

With best regards, Tilman

bit old but I'm a hofzinser level member, if anyone has any questions about whats what let me know (andrewwebbuk@gmail.com) It is slightly confusing about whats available and whats not from the site.. the online library is quite extensive, but is searchable off site..

however, due to copyright, only content that is out of copyright OR the center has express permission from the copyright holder is available on the online search..

however.. I'm currently reading on my screen copies of jinx, new pentagram, Sphinx and mahatma magazines.. for the membership price, you cannot get better than being able to read these three!!

The difference is in then amount of material you are allowed to search, but they don't publish the list because it's always changing. Try emailing them directly at contact CARC .

At one point they offered a free trial upgrade to the higher level so you could experience the difference. If that is still a valid offer, you could join at the lower level then check out the difference yourself.
The basic (Charlier) membership is an incredible bargain at the moment. Until Gibeciere issue 5 comes out, you'll still get issue 4, which will sell for $75 starting April 1st. And you'll get issue 5 which will sell for at least $40. That's $115 value and the Charlier membership is just $95. Plus you get a couple of nice newsletters edited by Mike Caveney and access (at a certain level) to the AskAlexander database. The access alone is easily worth the $95. Seems like a no-brainer to me to anyone with the least interest in magic history.

Thanks for the replies. It is the "at a certain level" I am unsure about. Does that mean I know the page number that a search term is located in a certain magazine or is there an adobe file available at the Charlier level?

The full page found during search is available at the Charlier level (in Adobe format).
