Current "Card Gods"

Postby Guest » June 19th, 2006, 6:10 pm

I would love to hear what the wisened Forum crowd has to say about this topic, purely for my own edification. --But to get to the question I have to reveal my lack of a photographic-memory...

In the 30s or 40s, somebody printed a list of the best living card men. The list included names like Vernon, Scarne, and Paul Rossini (if memory serves).

Years later, as a punk-kid, I subscribed to a long-gone, but fondly remembered magazine you may have heard of called "Richard's Almanac". (That was SO long ago, it was chiseled onto stone tablets and was delivered via pterodachtyl--but I digress...)

One issue, Mr. Richard Kaufman referred to that list and offered his current update. I believe his list included names like Daryl and Ricky Jay.

Thus I have arrived at my question for you folks. Who would be on the current list of card-manipulating demi-gods?

Obviously Ricky Jay and Daryl haven't suddenly turned crappy & thus have not lost their spots: who else is "The Current [censored]"?

What about young bucks like Asher & Fisher?

--Or old-hands like Mr. Cervon, Mr. L. Green, Mr. Sheridan?

Would Hollingworth even make the list?

I KNOW Mr. Weber deserves a spot...

Let's hear it: You guys know better than I!

Yes: Mr. Racherbaumer's takes on the question are excellent (follow Mr. Kranzo's link); but they are from 4 years ago!! Holy crap! I was hoping to hear the current buzz, man.

For flat out skill : Bill Malone, Steve Forte, and Gary Plants.

For the skill of appearing to be unskilled: Bill Goldman.

That picture was floating around on my hard drive and I'm not sure where I got it from. Sorry.

Chris...

Do you know who "owns" the picture? I'd like to put it on a mousepad.

No, I've had it for a while and don't remember where I got it. It is nice though. I googled around and couldn't find it again. Must have forgotten the search terms I used back in the day when I originally downloaded it.

Kind of funny to see a bit of cheating going on while good old Ganesh uses his trunk to hold his cards.

A search on "Gods Playing Poker" (considering it's a take-off on the well-known, "Dogs Playing Poker") turned up this:

http://www.threadless.com/submission/58 ... ying_Poker

That appears to be the designer. Looks like it was designed to be a shirt, though the submission was not accepted.
