The Air Pressure Turnover

Postby John Nicholls » February 15th, 2005, 7:58 am

Hello everbody,

Fr. Roger Crosthwaite and I have been trying to to discover the earliest written source of this well known card revelation which we know as the air pressure turnover. Can anybody help?

Roger remembers seeing Victor Farelli perform the move in London way back in April 1955 and it may well date back before this.

We would be grateful for any information. It often seems that the most familiar items are the hardest to run to ground. Incidentally, Fr. Roger will be coming to the USA to undertake a short lecture tour at the end of April/ beginning of May.

It's in Hofzinser's Card Conjuring which dates back to 1910. I haven't seen it in print prior to 1910.

There are several popular books published prior to 1910 that contain the move. It's in Edwin Sachs' Sleight-of-Hand (1877), August Roterberg's New Era Card Tricks (1897), and S. W. Erdnase's The Expert at the Card Table (1902).

According to Bart Whaley, the first time the revelation appeared in print was in 1829 in The Boy's Own Book.

The ancestor of this flourish/sleight was described in LE TESTAMENT DE JEROME SHARP by Henri Decremps in 1786 (The Will of Jerome Sharp)
translated in english by Jean Hugard.
