Women in Magic

Postby Guest » January 15th, 2002, 4:32 pm

I'm organizing a "Women in Magic" meeting for my local SAM, and putting together some history and video clips of famous women magicians. Does anyone have ideas, pictures, video clips, etc? One interesting fact I found is that a woman invented "The Dancing Hank." Women performers of today, I'm happy to include you! For anyone who contributes, I'll send a copy of my final package.

Thanks,
Miranda

Some links of interest: http://www.uelectric.com/pastimes/talma.htm http://www.uelectric.com/pastimes/triplealliance.htm http://members.aol.com/pegpsych/history.htm

Also, an ad for a friend:
Sheila Lyon is a very nice woman who owns and runs Seattle's only magic shop. She did a talk some years ago about Women in magic. Perhaps she can offer some more scholarly assistance:

Good luck

I saw Lisa Menna do some amazing magic with great presentations on the Swedish show "Magiskt". She is one of the best female close-up magicians I have ever seen. I believe you can find her site at http://www.menna.com/

Hi Miranda -
May I suggest you also contact female illusionist, Lyn Dillies. Lyn's been touring with her full evening illusion show, "The Magic Of Lyn", successfully for over 20 years. She has appeared in Atlantic City, on numerous television shows, and at corporate events around the country for many years. She not only is the star of the show, but she equally shares the duties of loading her trucks, setting up props, and even drives the trucks. One of Lyn's claims to fame is that she is the first illusionist in history, male or female, to produce TWO Asian elephants in succession, outside, in the open, virtually surrounded. I'm sure Lyn would make a wonderful addition to your event. Please e-mail me privately for her contact information.

Hi, Miranda,

"Those Beautiful Dames," compiled by Frances Marshall, is a great source of information - there is a particularly fine section on British female magicians by Amy Dawes. "100 Years of the Magic Poster" by Charles & Regina Reynolds includes some dazzling images of Golden Age performers.

I have a private collection of female magician memorabilia - no video, but a good variety of brochures, photos, letterheads, and other promotional material. Feel free to contact me privately if you'd like more details.

Best of luck on your quest,

Lisa Cousins

--Asrah,

Is Becky Blaney still actively performing? (As I stopped watching television, a few years ago, I haven't seen her name pop-up anywhere.)

The Marketplace, a feature of NPR has been doing a series on women in business and ran a feature with Washington, DC performer Karen Beriss.

A nice interview, and some good press for a performer who is busy (with her business partner) transforming the perception of magic from the floors of convention halls...

Karen was featured on Monday, the 14th of January on NPR's The Marketplace. In case you missed the program, follow the link...

What a wonderful response from everyone! I've gotten many wonderful suggestions, and have gotten into contact with some of the performers listed, and gotten text from the Marketplace segment.

As word has spread, this has now become the start of a Women in Magic article for Genii. I'm interested in describing womens' roles in the history of magic, for instance as assistants and coaches (even to Houdini!) originally, and now more recently as performers. I know I often have to find some way to respond to kids who say "girls can't be magicians!" Or reprove myself to groups when I do walkaround magic, that yes I do know how to shuffle a deck of cards and even do magic tricks with them!

What do you think?

Steve - I ***ume Becky Blaney is still performing - I see her bio/resume pop up in several booking agents' online listings, though I haven't seen any specific appearances lately. --Asrah

Carol Roy and Pam Thompson (the And Co. of the Great Tomsoni) have lectures on ladies in magic.

Jade, Juliana Chen, and Bin Lin (who just won the Gold Lions Head) and Roxanne (winner of Sarmoti) are top acts. Lisa Menna has been mentioned.

Dell O'Dell had her own TV Series.

Gerrie Larsen performed.

Celeste Evans was a top act in Chicago area years ago.

Don't forget Moi Yo Miller. Tina Lenert.

Sara Kabagujina partnered with Sultanguli Shukuruv to win FISM.

Charlotte Pendragon performs some effects solo as does Brenda, late of Bob Brown and Brenda.

Shemada (Haruo's daughter)

I was told the 'Showgirls of Magic' is a terrific show in Las Vegas at the San Remo, but I missed it. It is produced by Bonnie Saxe, Melinda's mother.
Stay tooned.

Hello again, Miranda -

If memory serves, I believe two of the last issues of Tannen's Magic Manuscript (no longer published) had cover stories dedicated to Women in Magic. Perhaps Tony Spina may have a couple of those issues hanging around.

Youtube has several professional magiciennes who've contributed webvideos. Under the account names of "Sissymagic;" "glyndavies;" and "Asrah."

The first is the "Diva" Copperfield of Mexico. The second is, I think, a British connoisseur of up-and-coming magiciennes. And, the third is, I think, a French specialist in the Chinese linking rings and the Oriental cords.

People - this thread is six years old! I'm sure that Miranda has long since done her presentation! I mean, the newborns of the time are school kids now!

Lol! Then, maybe, they should have padlocked it, or highlighted the expired date, or something.

Magicienne? Talk about a dated term! That's more dated than this thread!

The date of every post is right next to the name of the poster.

Well, I obviously missed it, the first time around. In fact, for all I know, the out-of-date date did not appear there until AFTER I had posted my reply! A little magic of your own, perhaps?
