I'm spending that lousy five hours on a plane in mid July.
One thing that was going to make that trip less painful was my new copy of "The Vernon Touch".

Any good news to be had?
Will I survive this plane flight with the help of Dai's wisdom?

The book should be back on press within the next few days. Then a few days to bind, shrink wrap, etc. Then they get shipped to the warehouse, checked in, and shipped out by media mail.
Sorry to say it'll be a few weeks before anyone sees one. (Though they might hand stitch a few copies for me to show as samples at the IBM in Miami.)

Good news ... at long last The Vernon Touch book is done and it looks great.

All copies should be in the mail by Wednesday or Thursday of this coming week. You should have them a week or two after that.

Richard,

Perhaps you will have a few copies with you to FISM, hence reducing the postage cost?

Let the encomia begin! Beautifully produced and worth the 15 year wait and every penny of the price.

My advice: open it anywhere and start reading. Delights abound!

How does the book make it to England and it hasn't arrived in Oregon yet?

It arrives in England first because the purchaser paid $35 or $40 extra for DHL courier delivery.

In the US we shipped them by UPS, which cost us almost $10 each!

Okay, I should have been patient as it arrived the very next day. I have only been able to glance through it but know already it was worth the wait. This is a great book.

Sitting by the mail box waiting in Northern Ontario. :(
I am worse than my kids at Christmas time! To think I claim to be a mature adult?!?!
Sounds like Mr. Kaufman has hit a Grand Slam again! :D Looking forward to this gem. :)

In the case of this book, the lion's share of the credit has to go to Joe Pecore, who OCR'd the whole thing, and to Matt Field, Dustin Stinett, Gary Plants, and Michael Albright, who proofread the monster.

Albright made it all look very pretty with a great layout and helped find many photos in addition to the ones we borrowed from the American Museum of Magic. And he really doubled the size of Noah Levine's index.

So, my participation was really a managerial one (and I did pick the cover photo). I'm still down in the trenches with Larry Jennings!

Received my copy in Kansas City on July 21 and it was well worth the wait!! This book is one of the best values in magic. The quality and the layout are oustanding.

Thank you Mr. Kaufman for taking the time to do this project right.

Arrived by surface mail in Scotland yesterday (picked up from the post office this morning).

This leaves me with a dilemma - do I read the book or actually get something done this weekend...

A first glance looks stunning.

Take care, Ian

I received the "Vernon Touch" today. WOW!!!! I blew off the end of my work day, went to my local Starbucks, grabbed a coffee, and started reading. I actually thought I would read and uncover the photos page by page. Yeah right!!!! After reading the first few columns, I just started flipping pages to enjoy the great photos. Richard, you have outdone yourself. I can't tell you how proud I am to have this wonderful book on my shelf. Although it won't make it to the shelf for about a month. Thank you!!!

This is a book that I highly recommend not to read straight through. Read the first couple of years of columns and then set the book aside for a while: Catch up on your other reading. Then pick this up and read a couple more years worth of columns and set it down again, and so on.

The reason for that is because you might open yourself up to the fact that there isas should be expected given the number of decades these columns coversome redundancy in The Professors writings.

What a wonderful collection! I just read bout Dai finding the center deal. His thoughts about magic really make it clear why he was the greatest influence in the last century.

i am loving this book, but i dont agree with vernon on women and magic. i have found women who love magic.i do admit though, a lot has changed since vernon wrote this, and women have changed more than anything.

any of the older guys see a difference in women and magic from the past, to women and magic of today?

Great thought Dustin! It's probably why I enjoy reading short stories. You can get your "professor" fix in just the right dose, whenever you need it!!

Coincidentally, I was talking with Jules Lenier last night at the Castle. We were discussing the "Vernon Touch" and he let me know that he actually had written almost all of the "Vernon Touch" articles. He and Vernon would head upstairs to the old library. Jules would turn on an old "reel to reel" tape recorder and Vernon would start talking. Jules would then transcribe Vernon's thouhts into written form.

That's an overstatement: he didn't "write" them, he transcribed and edited some of them. Many others either retyped or transcribed and edited the columns over the years including Don Lawton, Bill Larsen, Jr., and Bill Bowers.
