This is a weird but real question. With the new year at hand, I've had to buy two more magazine racks to hold the 2006 editions of the magic magazines I subscribe to, which means finding six more inches of shelf space to set them on. I am running out of room rapidly, and at the current rate I figure I can subscribe to Genii and MAGIC for only three more years, give or take how many great books Todd Karr puts out in that time. Help! Does anyone have any great storage ideas? Where do you keep your magazine collection?

Steve, the only good answer is to buy a bigger house.

I recently had 7-foot high cases built, using up all but two-feet of the available wall space in my library (my daughter moved out: One down, one to go). I also had a matching case that fits under my desk built, and I still dont have enough space. Ive moved the museum back into my bedroom (where everything was when both kids lived at home), but I still have boxes filled with periodicals. So, Im thinking about having shelves built inside the library closet (where all the Christmas decorations and our luggage is stored) for the periodicals. That other stuff can be moved to a small storage garage we maintain. Of course, thats what my wife thinks about the periodicals!

I always thought to make a shelve just below the ceiling all around the walls.... this is equivalent to at least three full cupboards...

Max Maven had bookshelves made two deep. You just have to remember what's on the shelf behind the front rows.

I had 300 books in the basement and the five foot deep flood took them away... but the Insurance Money made it easy to not miss them.

I have the perfect solution for you. It will solve your problems. No new shelves. No displaced kids. No upset wifes. No fear of water damage. No double rows and inconvenient storage places.

Every book I have available in electronic form, went in a box and in storage. Some I sold, but most went into storage. The ebooks take only a few inches of shelf space for the discs. They are also on my hard disc for quick access.

With this technique you can even gain space. My appartment is so cramped and filled that this is the only way I can survive. Every wall has a shelf. Several shelves point into the room. There is no space left. Digital is the only way to continue.

I'm slowly going digital on my VHS tapes, converting them to dvd. No desire to do that with books, but it's an interesting alternative. I like the bigger house idea best.

When I visited the Forum Homepage, I never thought that this is what a thread titled "Six More Inches" would be about.

To David Fletcher's sensible suggestion to discard that which has not been used for a couple of years I offer this counter.

In my life I have twice during moves from one city to another lost an entire library. I have now reached an age where I can no longer reach books on the bottome shelf and so have had to downsize. I can assure you that in the process of clearing out excess I have learned the bitter fact that in every case there will come a time down the road when you want to check a fact, cite a quotation, or otherwise refer to a book which has gone from the shelves through misadventure or housecleaning.

Pete Biro may find in insurance compensation some solace for the loss of his library. I will wager, however, that he will feel grating pangs of loss when he wants to check on something, refresh his mind on a point, or point proudly for a visitor to a rare volume.

In fine, the old man says: heed not the advice to discard. Cling to what you have with miserly clutch.

What?? !! Funny, every time I grab a handfull of books to SELL I start to read and find things of interest and they go back onto the shelf... :cool:

This is why I don't have a library card as libraries expect you to give the book back at some point in time.
