Postby Riversky » October 11th, 2012, 12:14 am

I'm looking for any suggestions or references for story patter script for a simple Thumb Tip silk vanish and reappearance presentation.
Thanks

i cant tell you that its up to you to make up your patter and suite it to your style there are so many different ways but my advice for one thing is you must not show your hands enpty with the thumb tip on for very long but your not really risking the audience seeing it too much at all

i agree with terren, seeing your hands empty is enough. but be carefull to your angles.

"Look, here's a silk. Now it's vanished. Ta da. Look, here it is again. Ta da."

That will be $10 please.

Thanks.

This might help ....

REAL or NOT REAL

I am a magician. We help people to see things that are not real and not see things that are real.

This small piece of cloth looks real. When I put it in my hand it is still just as real.

(Snap your fingers)

But when I open my hand that small piece of cloth, that just a moment ago seemed so real, is now gone.

But when I close my hand again around something that is not real ...

(Snap your fingers)

now something that was not real looks real.

Really!

Not trying to be funny or anything, but it is such a straight forward effect why do you need any patter at all?

Go silent.

Hi

If you can, check out an old video/dvd with Pat Page on the TT, some great ideas and sound advice on handling.
I think L&L have it? Possibly a Trik-a-Tape production?

Years ago, when the TT was exposed on TV, I used to do an effect where I vanished a Red silk with the aid of a pull.
All the time I wore the TT and at the end someone would invariably comment on my 'unusual' thumb. So I would pull it off and show that I had a white silk in there, "No, that's my hanky".

Much obliged for your suggestions and ideas.
The Patrick Page video has high reviews.
Is Patrick Page's Book of Thumb Tips recommended?
L & L's World Greatest Magic Thumb Tips has some outstanding teachers on it.
I've come across other resources like:

Darwin's Thumb Tip Thinking, Thumb Tip Miracles and Thumb Tip Secrets
Stuart Robson's Tips on Thumbs
John Kenyon's Thumbs Up

Plenty of good stuff in Tarbells.

According The Magic Lineage Project, William Humpage, also known as "Professor Herwin (1861-1946) invented the gimmick in 1885.
In Hoffman's Later Magic a fellow named Joseph Hartz fashioned a thin copper thimble
for the production of handkerchiefs referred to as the Hartz Thumb.
In T.A. Waters Encyclopedia of Magic and Magicians, Hartz as the possible inventor is only speculation.
Does the use of the Thumb Tip appear in any magic literature prior to Later Magic?
Please keep the insights, advice and TIPS coming.

About 3 years ago, I was at a lecture from Dan Harlan. Thanks to his experience in magic together with his theatrical skills, he showed an amazing way to present the vanishing silk with the help of the TT.
I don't know if you can find it on the internet, but he presented this classical effect under the name of 'The world's saddest trick'.
He uses a little bottle with eyedrops (the bottles people use who use lenses) to act as if he's crying from sadness because his silk always vanishes. By taking the bottle out of his pocket, he creates a chance to steal/drop his TT. The little bottle, he uses also to exaggerate the magic moment, he drops 1 drop onto his closed fist and when he opens his hand, the silk dissappeared. ;-)

Ok, did some search on youtube and found his 'World's saddest trick, so I edit this post and give you the url. You'll see his TT-routine in the first part of the video.

Scripting Magic includes Eric Henning's presentation for this trick, which is a wonderfully engaging routine developed for use in family restaurants. Very clever with handling for the appearance and vanish that I've never seen anywhere else. The book is out of print but when I finish Scripting Magic 2 (any day now) we will reprint the original.

Not thumb tip exactly, but one of my favourite routines is Pop Haydn's comedy silk routine.

It's almost thumb tip. You'll know if you see it.

My favorite example of a story based presentation was the "The Emperor's New Clothes" presentation I saw MarcoM do once. I believe it was his(?) and that the presentation might still be available.

"Steve Dusheck's Thumb Tip Magic" has mostly uncommon uses of thumb tips. Buy about a gross of them 'cause you'll be cutting a lot of them up.
