I think it should be a holiday.

Disney just pushed for copyright extension. Trademarks last as long as they are in use.

my dad mentioned to me a week or so ago that his
nephew roy passed away...
was he one of the last of the Disney's?

Roy was not the last Disney. Walt's daughter Diane is alive and well, as are her children and (I think) grandchildren. Plenty of Disney family left.
