Great acts I never got to see live...

Postby Guest » January 10th, 2003, 7:11 pm

I'd like to have seen the following acts live, not in any particular order of importance. Most of these I've seen on tape or film: Fred Kaps,The Banana Man :) (got to see him on Captain Kangaroo), Channing Pollock (I think I may have gotten to see him on Hollywood Palace) Can anyone confirm that he ever appeared on this show? Mr. Biro???Cardini,Houdini,Slydini,Flydini...Tony Marks,Frakson, Dante, Ken Brooke...Anyone else?

Pete,

I'll restrict myself to naming a single performer:

Roy Benson

John

The short list (there could easily be a long list):

Don Alan
Richard Ross
Charlie Miller
Jay Ose
Francis Carlyle
Max Malini
Hofzinser

My brain is getting feeble, because I cannot recall if I saw Fred Kaps live or not. I saw him SO many times on TV and he was one of my favorites, but I can't recall if I saw him at a convention or if he did "It's Magic" before he passed (Pete???). How is it possible that I could forget? I think if I did see him, I was in a euphoric trance because Fred Kaps was the man!

Dustin,

The tape I saw of Kaps was a performance at what appeared to be a Japanese magic convention???-Mr. Biro-again I ask for your assistance in verification. By the way the Ken Brooke stories were wonderful. :)

What I saw him on was a FISM performance that was used to create a weekly "magic special." They used several hunks of what I guess was his entire act--as they did for many great performers including Richard Ross. In fact, it was one of the years that Ross won the Grand Prix. It was used on a couple of different shows during the 1970s. One was hosted by Bill Bixby, the other just had a voice over. These shows were shown on local stations in the LA & San Diego areas (where I lived I could tune in both). The best part was that they were shown over and over again! When they stopped showing in LA, a San Diego station would start showing them. I loved it. Too bad this was pre (affordable) VCRs! I'll bet that Bill McIlhany has them on video!

Roy Benson, one of my all time favorites, was on TV a lot. The Gary Moore show is the one I most recall. At one time I was going to do an "Impression" of him at a convention, but never did finish working on it.

All those mentioned except (I think) Malini are on tape somewhere.

Bill MacIlhenney (SP?) probably has them.

Ken Brooke was on a series of demo tapes that Harry Stanley produced. THEY WERE TERRIBLE, in that they were almost all demonstrating Slydini effects, pretty much silent and NOT KEN'S personality at all.

Lloyd Jones bought the collection from Stanley and MAYBE Byron Walker still has them???

Kaps tapes are petty commmon. One of the last was when we worked in Tokyo... but as good as Fred was, the orchestra screwed up and was one tune off and you can see Fred motioning to them ... if you didn't know you may not have noticed.

The old "You Asked For It" tv show had some of the likes of Frakson and Dante... ;)
Stay tooned.

For me, Del Ray. The video of him perorming is one of the greatest performances I've ever witnessed.

I know video/film is not the same as witnessing a live performance, but I've praised Bill McIlhany in the pages of Genii for making performances of Don Alan, Blackstone Sr., Kalanag and many others available to magicians. Watching them is inspirational and instructive as well as entertaining. I'd also like to publicly praise Joe Stevens for his wonderful series of Greater Magic Library videos.

I'm sorry to have never seen Larry Jennings, Michael Skinner or Mike Rogers perform live. There are great recordings of their work issued by Dominique Duvivier, Geno Munari and the aforementioned Mr. Stevens.

I'm most grateful for having seen Slydini perform several times at Mostly Magic. It is a shame that there are no commercially available recordings of his great work. (Paging Christian Fechner!)

Richiardi, of course!!!! His was -- quite simply -- the greatest illusionist I have ever seen. If you never witnessed his art and artistry, you missed something very, very special.

I wish I could sit at a table with Al Goshman or Sen. Crandall if I could go back in time.

I just noticed the International Magic in London has a tape of Goshman's act for sale when he performed over there years ago. I am greatly looking forward to seeing it since the tape Goshman made himself when he did his book wasn't very good.
There are only a few people who seemed like they could do real magic when you were sitting at a table with them--Goshman was one, Slydini was another. These experiences can never be captured on TV or any other recorded medium--you HAD to be sitting at the table or in the audience a few feet away to really get hit with the full force of the wizardry.

For me it would have been:

Koran
Fogel
Hoy
Dunninger
Andruzzi
Romark
Kuda Bux
(the above I've seen on film/tape only, Kuda Bux I saw when I was much younger and would have loved to seen him when I was older to appreciate his work)
Alexander
Annemann
Al Baker
Orville Meyer
Ned Rutledge

Success!!!

I have The International Magic Close-up Magic Video Catalogue, which is a sampler tape. And that includes several minutes of Goshman. Lovely to watch.

Jay Ose once appeared on Art Linkletter. Perhaps McIlhany can track that down some day. One of the great video performances (card fans and linking rings) was Johnny Carson on his own show.
