Avoid Reel Abuse

Postby Jim Riser » May 6th, 2016, 2:37 am

I just took in another very nice reel for some work on it. Once again, someone who did not know what he was doing used improper tools on the reel trying to open it. The result was deep scratches on a great reel. I put together a 5 page pdf showing the correct tools to use when working on a good reel and a couple commonly seen reel construction variations. Hopefully info this will help to prevent such damage.

The pdf may be seen here:

Please take care of your quality reels from the past.

Thanks for posting that, Jim. And it's nice to see some new work come out of the shop again!

The spanner wrenches that Jim refers to can be found here (close equivalent) and here.

Two other related tools that you may not need often, but when you do, nothing else works near as well:

Watch case wrench: link
Snap Ring pliers: link

[Harbor Freight sells cheap imported tools. If you use these often, you should get some better quality ones. But for occasional use, they are fine. I bought these on impulse at the local store, and the watch case wrench paid for itself the first time I needed to change a battery.]
