Let's Discuss Ed Massey's Ribbon Fantastique & Other Versions

Postby I.M. Magician » April 11th, 2016, 5:30 pm

I have always liked Ed Massey's Ribbon Fantastique as well as other versions of that effect. Is it a powerful effect? I would say no. Does it have a strong climax? I would say no to that as well.

In spite of it's missing punch, many magicians including myself like the effect and simple method. There is something about it.

There have been some interesting versions released over the years including Tenyo's Sutekina, Magic Works' Rope of Calcutta and Magic Wagon's Absconding Lycan. The Tenyo version didn't offer anything new, the Magic Works version did and was a terrific new version and design, and Magic Wagon's version is a work of art and
in my opinion, the best if them all. It displays beautifully, handles well, and provides the opportunity to present the effect with an interesting story.

Do you own one or more versions? If so, which ones? Is there a version I didn't mention here? How do you present it? Any interesting ideas for it's presentation. Let us know your thoughts on this classic of magic!

Is the principle used in The Marvelous Blocks by Ed Massey described in The Sphinx, Vol. 46, no 1, March 1947 the same as in Ribbon Fantastique ?
