I was reading this topic from back in 2004. But I didn't find what I was looking for, so hopefully someone can help. Thanks in advance.
I'm looking for a routine or 'knife' to do a stage version of mid air card stab.
Here's the details. I don't want the Kennedy version because of the pocketknife, I want a BIG knife, maybe even a butcher knife. I also want the cards to be sprayed in the air by the spectator, not spread on a table or wrapped in a napkin. I want to take the knife and impale the signed card in mid-air.
Is there anyone who does this or knows of info on a knife.
I checked into purchasing the sword but I don't have it in my budget to purchase a $300.00 trick at this time.

Sounds like you want to do a card sword! I don't think it would be too terribly difficult to rig up an enormous knife for that.

Re: Mid-Air Card Stab
Jay Sankey published a mid-air card stab that uses a butter (or steak) knife in Sankey Unleashed (Squash Publishing, 2004).

Senator Crandall used to do an impromptu version with a large knife and a deck of cards.

Docc Hilford did a nice version that he sold for awhile. He used a Samurai sword and a signed card. I saw him do it and it went over well.

Re: Mid-Air Card Stab
Recently I saw a nicely dressed magician reach into his bag and get out a large knife. He was using it for a cut and restored rope routine. I liked the image of the large knife and 3-piece suit. I believe maybe everyone becomes just a LITTLE more alert about what is getting ready to happen next. Maybe I should say it intensifies the moment.
Thanks for everyones quick input.
David, I'll look into Sankey's book.
David, do you know with Sankey's routine, is it impromptu or are there gimmicks involved?
I'm not asking for the secret, I just don't want to buy the book and read that you have to have 2 years of 'shop class' to rig up the thing.

It isn't impromptu (i.e. there's a set-up), but there's no gimmick involved.

Check out LETHAL by Bobby Motta

Crandall's was terrific, ungimmicked and not that difficult.
You could also try my card in Rat Trap.

Re: Mid-Air Card Stab
You don't need a sword to do Doc's routine.........I do it all the time in restrauants with the large steak knives furnished when you order steak. If you want to employ Doc's exact handling (i.e., gaffing the PaperMate "PhD Multi" pens) you can gaff them for just a few bucks by purchasing the "exacto" blades............but any handling you chose to employ to "load" the chosen card will suffice.....the method is really not important, as you have plenty of time and cover to do "the business" as you interact and move among the folks seated at your table.

This makes me think it is time to put my comedy card stab on the market. Stay tooned.
