Need Help figuring out maker of Vintage Die Box

Postby Glenn Farrington » August 4th, 2008, 11:18 pm

Here are some photos. I found an illustration in the April 1909 Spinx that seems to match. It was in the article "The New Die Box Illusion as performed by Carl Hertz" translated from Der Zaubersplegel.

Anyway...I picked this up in Europe years ago from a collector. It's a varnished black painted wood. It has the sucker sound and the matching chimney has the gimmiked die as well. The die is a solid block of wood. I have no idea who made it...anyone? anyone? Bueller?

Cracks are the spice of life...and that's about as far as I'm going with that one.

Anyway...thanks for the maker...any idea for the time period?

Id be interested to know this too, because my own die box, has identical hardware on the top of it, although the rest of the box, has a very much different look. Its solid oak, with ebony and ivory knobs on the doors back and front, solid brass hinges, and the two shells, have a small brass tongue catch, ( though one is missing) to hold them shut.

and it has a lovely clonk, as the slider slides.
