Precedents for Ring/Coin Move

Postby JHostler » October 15th, 2023, 10:58 pm

The video linked below is a bit odd/awkward in that my arms are wrapped around a camera tripod for a "rear view." This knacky-but-fun thing is designed for circumstances where someone insists on seeing magic performed from behind. From the front, you'd see my right pinky hooked (its tip contacting the proximal interphalangeal joint/knuckle of the third finger) and acting as a basket for the falling ring.

I strongly suspect this has been done with coins, but am not a “coin guy” per se and hope someone can point me in the direction of a precedent/credit. Advance thanks…

I believe it's Richard Himber Vanish

Yes, it's a Himber Vanish

I've been struggling to master it for far too many years

Me too to find a reference.

The New Gen, no. 2, 1971, page 68

But his move is older. It's in a marketed trick but I don't know which one.

Thanks Dave & Philippe. I just found some video of the Himber move. Not precisely the same technique, but pretty close in concept!

You can find the Himber Coin Vanish in Apocalypse, Vol. 5, no. 9, september 1982, page 682.

I'm not well versed in coin magic, but apart from a book by Aurelio Paviato that's the only place I've seen it explained in writing. Surely it must be somewhere else? Ian Kendall also teaches it very well in his Basic Coin Magic Vol. 2 download from Vanishing Inc.

Sankey has it somewhere either in print or video. I think he uses it for a few items.

It's also explained in The Coin and Card Magic of Bobby Bernard (1982, page 43) who seems to have been a good friend of Richard Himber.

There is a book entitled Richard Himber: The Man and his Magic (1980) but I haven't with book.

If someone can check...

I don't have either of those books  , but the "Himber Vanish" does seem to be in both of them under different names:

https://donsmagicandbooks.com/products/richard-himber-the-man-and-his-magic-ed-levy (in Chapter III; see Contents pages)
https://www.conjuringarchive.com/list/book/875

And the Conjuring Archive says it's related to the Kaps Drop Vanish.
