If you had to show ONE card trick what would it be???

Please - don't describe it for Castaway, that way he may have to buy at lease ONE of my books, and you'll be doing him a favor! HARRY LORAYNE.

What? the pencil illustrations in my copy of George Anderson's Magic Digest are among the most beautiful in any magic book in my library. And the book is one of the best beginner books I've ever read.Originally posted by castawaydave:

Mr. Duncan! Is the card through the table trick in that book?
Please forgive my brusque description of the drawings in that book, as I was citing my faulty memory: I don't believe I have glimpsed at that book more than once in almost 25 years.
I am an illustrator and never wish to (undeservedly) denigrate anyone's artwork.
I just remember learning that trick when I was a kid: and how strong it has played for all these years. It really is a great example of a SIMPLE, STRAIGHT-FORWARD easy to follow effect... with no "phony histrionic bells and whistles" that might strike some as "old fashioned" (dear God how tired am I of the expression "old-school"?! But I digress..)
SO the questions is, who is credited if it appears in that book, Mr. Duncan? Mr. Benzais, Mr. Lorayne? Anonymous? I just don't remember.
But I DO know I coul dteach that trick to any random punk kid, and he could DOMINATE HIS TARGET MARKET FROM THEN ON!! ;) :p    :genii: :)

David Williamson's "Torn & Restored Transpo".
Most good card tricks can amaze lay people to a certain extent; but what "Torn & Restored Transpo" does is make them lose themselves.

For me, it'd have to be either Hyper-Warp or its son. (Both are in that excellent book, as plugged by Tom in his post. :) )Originally posted by Tom Frame:

I would also go for card warp, particularly Warp II from Ultra Cervon (believe it's on page 88)...amazing version!

In Magic Digest the trick is attributed to Annemann, and can be found on page 77 as a variation of the trick called "Sheer Nerve".Originally posted by castawaydave:

Castaway Dave--
Your original description more closely describes the Benzais version written up by Harry in 1961 (and originally published in 1962). The version in Magic Digest (published in 1976), and its accompanying illustration, indicate that the card is held up by the forefinger.
I am intrigued by the Annemann reference. Either technique is effective and essentially the same piece.
Anyone else have work in this area? (Bill--thanks for pointing out the Anderson reference...)

The one card trick I do if I only do one is Rendezvous Aces from my new book Kingdom of the Red . It's been favorably reviewed in the book section of The Magic Cafe (which as we speak is offline). I've performed this for about 40 years and it's a proven worker and fooler. I teach it in the book and on the companion DVD.

A two card transpo in their hands with a signed card. I don't think there is a stronger effect.
Re: If you had to show ONE card trick what would it be???
I would do Slydini's Helicopter Card. That is if I could...which I can't. At least not like he did it. As for Schulien's ...that restaurant was the oldest eatery in the city of Chicago dating back to the great Chicago fire. It closed a few years ago and there is an available video tape of the closing night. I, along with many others, had the pleasure of seeing Matt Schulien do the "card under the tablecloth". That effect was also on another tape of Matt performing.

For over forty years now I've always started a card session for laymen - when a deck is handed to me - with my own HaLo Again. It's a perfect opener, and leads into a couple of 4-ace routines. HARRY LORAYNE.

I usually go with a combo of Twisting the Aces/Doc Daley. I always thought they go together very well.

The origin of the revelation is uncredited, and given how many names I learned from that book, I suspect Mr. Anderson believed it to be unknown.Originally posted by castawaydave:

...snippage...

Anneman is not specifically credited but his handling of the trick appears on page 77 of The Magic Digest. Anneman used his INDEX finger to hold the card against the underside of the table while holding the spectators wrist to position his hand. This is an interesting variation because the spectator will feel his wrist encircled by your thumb and fingers and not be able to count fingers; a subtle but masterful touch.
I believe a careful reading will show that "Sheer Nerve" is the name of a control Anneman was fond of, and not the Card Thru Table revelation. There are several revelations mentioned in that article including simply glimpsing and naming the card.

"Think of a Card"--If it was good enough for the Professor, it's good enough for me. Vernon had this effect in his repertorie long before most magicians realized its value. He was always a step ahead...
Anyone interested in this effect should purchase Tom Baxter's e-book.

I do a strong version of Out of the World but agree with Leo that Think of a Card is extremely strong. I've reviewed Tom's e-book elsewhere - http://geniimagazine.com/forum/cgi-bin/ ... 5;t=000261 - and suggest that anyone thinking of doing this effect buy and read Tom's insights.

I haven't read this entire thread, so don't know if anyone else has suggested this item.
First thing is to have the deck examined by the spectator and allow him (or her) to select a card while holding the deck. Deck is returned to me.
I then have the selection returned to the deck. Perform Quick 3-Way. A ton of magic in there and it kills.

Any of several versions of ACAAN, hands down, not even a second thought any longer.
Re: If you had to show ONE card trick what would it be???
Chicago Opener/Surprise--short ambitious card sequence--ending in card to envelope in wallet.
Technically more than one trick, but I've used this combo so often I could do it in my sleep so it feels like one trick.

Derek did it no better than anyone else--his method is published (correctly in the memorial issue of Genii, using the Gordon Turnover) and anyone who can handle a double card could do it just as well.

I have regretted not mentioning this before, PARTICULARLY if confronted with a borrowed deck: Earl Nelson's "Between Your Points of Departure".
A good vanish freaks people out, and it disappears from within their hands. A legendary trick.

A GREAT trick (from a long-forgotten [by me] beginners' book) to do for one person when you're both seated at a table is--"Card Through Table"--
Harry Lorayne, in one of his books, has a spectacular card-thru-table kind of effect that is done in totoal darkness. It's a killer.
